k I feel as if I have virtually no chance among people like you...
My school is one of the "best in the country" whatever the heck that means and I'm having trouble getting past like a 92 average. I'm taking AP's and such and I have linguistics and science/math interests outside of school but I feel as if I've not done too much. Here are some current stats:
freshman 93 overall sophomore 92 overall
this year I have like shytti grades in some classes like calc BC: 86
and APUSH :87 and the others are all around 92-93-94-95 range throughout the past three quarters.
EC's:
I only did debate for a semester this year but I had so much shytt to do at one point that I had to quit or else I would have died even more in school
Science Olympiad
Adventures in Supercomputing
Choir/ various choral groups
sax
Linguistics (Mandarin, Yoruba, Igbo, Bambara)
general interest in science in math but nowhere to start (i'm a frigg'n feilyr)

I feel like nothing really stands out besides maybe linguistics but is it too late?
I'm a junior right now and I need advice. My school makes it hard for anyone to get an A but there is a group of about 30/150 kids that always get As
I'm black too if you've not noticed... if that does anything interesting but put me in a lower category because of statistics...
Thanx CCers

You have good stats. Being in a very competitive high school with a high average with all those honors courses is very good. Also you extracurriculars are good too. If you want to do something more, voulinteer at somewhere in your freetime in the community or at a hospital. Colleges love it when they hear voulinteering. Also you said that you are black and that also helps. My friends that have minority status were helped in their applications. Don't freak out. I did that too last year because I did not think I had enough extracurriculars.

Btw NYC is cool!!! I want to get into some math contests because I know that I have the mind but perhaps not the nerves to handle it... it's some weird complex that I've acquired from my mother I think... it makes me really anxious on al tests and that's why I've not done so well with math o'er the past 3 yrs... it's a weird complex thing that I've probably further developed myself... I just feel like I'm in the "out" pool...my dreams are UPenn, Columbia, MIT, Rensselaer, Carnegie Mellon etc. Thanx so much XavierKnights'06!

Did you take the SAT's yet?

Are you applying for eniginnering? I saw Rensselaer on your list! That's a good dream school to have beacuse it is not as hard as those Ivys to get into but it defintely still has almost just as good as a reputation. If you are applying for engineering I can help you out. I just finished my whole application process and I will either go to Fairfield University, Rensselaer Poly Tech, Valparaiso University, or Syracuse University.

The fact that you are currently in the linguistics of four languages will help you stand out, particularly if you learned the actual languages in addition. The fact that you self-studied all that is insane and will be noticed.

You may not get into Harvard, but it's not the only school.

And maybe you will.

Actually, given the way admissions has been working, I would be a bit surprised if he did not end up at an Ivy League school, unless of course he does not apply to those schools for lack of interest.

Thank you all! I've thought about MIT a bit too because they have the pinnacle of research and development and that's what I want to do mostly, linguistics is just a side thing because I'm not advanced enough mathematically or scientifically to make my own research project. I may get an internship somewhere to do some physics research because that will probably be my major but I just want to know if I'm doing alright. Again, thank you, CCers!
