Could i have gotten in to UF with 3.7hpa 3.2gpa 1200sat, but im in the top 5% of my class.
And if it would have helped I am a chess champion, and have a uscf rating of 1925

The middle 50% range for grade point averages for the fall of 2008 was 4.0 to 4.4. The mid SAT scores were 1210 to 1400. Based on grades, you probably would not have been admitted. Depending on the rest of your application though, there is always a chance, albeit probably a small one. Many applicants with higher grades and scores that yours were rejected this year.

Someone said something on an earlier thread that I noticed, but I'm not sure if it's correct or not. This person posted their notes from an admissions counselor visiting their school (sorry whoever you are that I forgot :)), but anyway ... I remember in her (I think it was a her) notes that she said the UF admissions person said, "each candidate is evaluated against the other candidates from their particular school that are applying." I've never actually heard that said ... but it would make a lot of sense in terms of looking at the overall picture of why some w/ higher grades/scores don't get in and some with lower grades/scores do. If you take my d's school for example, it's a socially economically advantaged school: median income fairly high in the area, TONS of parental support, tons of AP's and programs, etc. So, at her school the chances of there being highter GPA's, test scores, etc. is greater than a school that doesn't have all the advantages that hers does. So at her school, the top 10% may have higher stats than the top 10% at a more disadvantaged school. Thus, you'd see a disparity of admits from these two schools.

The UF rep that visited our school said that exact same thing. There were some 50 kids in the auditorium, and she said that, we all kind of looked around at each other, noting who we were competing against. lol

Anyway, you definitely should've applied. You may not have been a lock, but you definitely had a shot. And the application fee is only $30. Then you wouldn't be saying "could I have..."

I have a classmate who was admitted to UF with a 3.6gpa 4.2hpa and 1050sat.
