Could I pull this off?

I am a freshman at a tiny, rural, religious liberal arts school. The community isn't very academic, which bothers me, and the vast majority of the classes in my major (history) are taught by one of two professors.

I'm enjoying my school. I've made friends and I'm able to get involved in lots of things here, but I know that over time I'm going to get tired of it here. The classes aren't very academically challenging (I'm already in junior level courses for my major), and the community is really small and I'm starting to feel trapped.

I definitely think I want to transfer, but there are still things I want to do here. I have an opportunity to study abroad here next year and I could potentially compete on a sports team - something I couldn't really do anywhere else.

What I really want to do is spend another year at my current college and then transfer to another more competitive liberal arts school for another three years. I'm on full scholarship where I am, have money saved up, and have a 4.0 so theoretically I should be able to afford/transfer.

Am I being really weird and crazy? Is this practical at all? And I don't suppose there's some way I could apply to schools this year (I'm not completely sure if I want to stay at my current school for another year) and then just end up transferring the year after next?

I don’t see why not. It’s really good that you’re on a scholarship, and are saving money while contemplating this. You could always apply now to schools you might be interested in to see if you get in or not. And if you do get in, you can always turn them down and sort of have this in the back of your mind that you did get into other schools and could possibly get in again if you decide to stay at your current college for another year to do study abroad and everything else you are interested in doing.

You may still have time to apply this year. A lot of apps for transfers aren’t due until March or April. I just started my apps for transfer.

I don’t know of a school where transfers can defer for a year like you can at some schools as a fr admit. If there is one, it’s rare.

Depending on the college and the number of credits that transfer, a school will determine how long you can stay. For schools with generous FA, they usually don’t permit students to hang around for extra time unless there’s a good reason; if you’re paying full fare they may be a little more lenient.

Thank you so much.

Would it look bad if I applied to transfer, didn’t end up transferring this year, and then tried to transfer again next year? In a couple of cases these would be schools I’d actually already gotten into when I applied for school the first time around. Will they get mad if I keep applying or are they not likely to care?

Well I applied to GWU and AU last year and got in. However, I didn’t receive anything about financial aid, loans etc from GWU and I had a lot of family issues so I didn’t end up replying to them. When I did get in contact with them they said I could appeal if I really wanted to go that semester and I said no because I have no idea what to do on the money front.

I ended up speaking with the associate director of admissions who said if I did apply again, they do take into consideration that I was accepted before and it does help.

But then again every school might be different. I’m actually going to call GWU tomorrow to find out if that is still true and how much would it possibly help.
