Could I qualify for National Merit?

I am a sophomore and I scored a 206 on the PSAT this year (70 reading, 68 math, 68 writing). As a freshman I scored a 190, but I scored higher on the writing portion last year than this year (71). I improved significantly in the math portion (scored in the 50's last year). Do you think I could qualify for National Merit next year? Also, what do you think I may score on the SAT? Thanks for reading!

It depends on what state you’re from.

Absolutely… Just keep working at it… By October, you can do it! I recommend big prep for Oct SAT followed by Oct PSAT… The PSAT will seem easy by comparison :)

What state are you in? If you provide that, we can tell you what the cutoff what this last year. It changes a bit every year, but would give some idea of what you need to shoot for.

Look up your state.

Thanks for your help, and I am from Florida.

I’d say definitely, if you time your SAT prep well with the PSATs! I got a 210 sophmore year and started SAT studying in August before junior year. My score jumped 17 points for the Oct. PSAT (227) without any extra studying. A 17 point jump for you would be a 223, which would get you qualified anywhere. Also, with studying, a 6 point (FL has a 211 cut off) jump would probably be a piece of cake!

My D scored 209 on PSAT in 10th grade and 228 in 11th grade. She did a little math prep on her own. I primarily attribute the increase to another year of education, experience and maturity. Nevertheless, I recommend to you what I recommended to her: dedicate a significant amount of time to focused prep addressing weaknesses from prior tests. Good luck. Your score should increase significantly.
