I just finished my freshman year with two math classes, geometry, and algebra 2 with trig.
In my sophomore year, I'm taking precalculus.
And then, in my junior year, I'm thinking of taking AP Calc BC. That way I would have finished AP calc BC without doing AB. And then I would proceed to do Calc III at my community college during Senior year.
Does that sound good?
Would skipping AP Calc AB look bad on my college applications? I hear my school's precalculus class is almost the same thing as AP calc AB.

“I hear my school’s precalculus class is almost the same thing as AP calc AB.”

Then it’s probably not precalculus?

Still, though, I don’t think there’s any reason why you can’t just take BC.

It won’t look bad. BC is the same as AB with a couple more topics. Take it if you want.

I teach HS Math. We take our better Pre-Calc students and place them in BC. When they get their BC results, they receive an AB subscore (since it covers those topics as well). Some students will not get credit for 2 semesters of college calc based on their BC score, but a 4/5 subscore on AB gets them credit for one semester of college calc. Some of our students taking AB study the add’l topics on their own and try the BC. Again, it is not a problem bc they receive 2 scores (BC and AB subscore).

Do you think it will be okay in my case? I don’t think I’ll get an AB subscore from my school.

There’s no reason to take AB if you’re allowed and ready to take BC. I took AB because I was going to run out of math classes at the high school if I didn’t, and I wasn’t willing to commute into the city to take one class. You sound both willing and able to commute, so you should probably take BC.

You don’t get an AB subscore from your school. It’s from collegeboard.
