Man....I'm going crazy!
This is my third year in cc and if I don't get into a decent school this year I don't know what I"ll do....

My GPA by the end of Fall '09 will be : 3.38, but please keep in mind I had a slow streak at the first year followed by an upwards leap of all A's the following year.

Major : Womens Studies
Extra Curriculars: I am a part of Phi Theta, Psi Beta, and the Honors Society, TAP- CERTIFIED, 60 hours of community service, held a job for the past two years, President of M.U.N in High School, M.U.N Delegate in College
High School GPA : 3.7

Also, what do you think of my chances to get into New York University and University of Southern California?

Everyone tells me I am at the borderline of the ballpark, because my major is not too competitive and I had a good padding of extra-curriculars, (even though my GPA doesnt fair too well), but I would really appreciate all your input too!

I am just so depressed because I was eligible for some good schools coming out of high school but now that I have messed up so bad on my first year of Community College that I am worried I may have to settle for something reallly low... :'(

Women's Studies...? I know I just said in another thread that your career is only what you make of it and not your degree... but seriously, Women's Studies? That's what most people would consider the easy way into UCLA. If you're truly passionate about studying this subject and are just not trying to find an easy way into UCLA then I apologize.

Anyway, the average GPA of admitted students to that major this year was 3.44, so you're still on the low side of things. Also keep in mind that they don't even look at your high school GPA for junior transfers, so you might as well throw that out the window (though it is pretty good).

Question: If you were accepted to some good schools out of high school then why did you choose to go to a CCC?

Three things really stood out for me that helped me be able to chance you: 1) You will be TAP-certified; 2) You're pursuing Women's Studies; and 3) you have an upward trend.

Given those factors, I'd say you should stray away from depression - your chances are pretty good.

I think it differs at each school. At my CC, if you have a 3.25 in 4 courses (15 semester units) and complete at least 16 hours of community service, you qualify for TAP.

at my school you need at least a 3.1 starting with 12 units, need to take at least 18 units of TAP qualifying courses, and can only take 2 TAP courses in the semester prior to transfer max

you have chance, first, you GPA is 3.37, it will improve a lot if you get straight A (1 B is acceptable) and your GPA is very likely to be above 3.43. so you are on the average. second, your GPA was upward trend, you may spend some space in your ps to discuss about it if the reason for low GPA in the first year was good enough. thirdly, you have TAG. good luck. for NYU, I am not sure but for USC, the chance should be higher than UCLA.

thank you for all your replies, and as a response to the first poster, I am studying women studies because I truly am interested in it as a major. Looking at the admitted profile, womens studies does NOT seem like the easy way to get in.

Also, my reason for bad first year grades I feel was valid, I ended being diagonosed for depression because of a death of someone very close to me, and thus I performed poorly in school.

My friend's daughter got into UCLA with Women Studies major and then she eventually switched to Computer Science. She has since graduated from UCLA. So it's possible. I don't know her CC GPA but I don't think it's outrageously high.
