I want to major in english. Would adding in some of my writing samples with my barnard application hurt my admission? Also, I’m getting an alumni referral, do you think that would possibly sway the commitee?

do it! ******

Alumni referral may or may not by significant, depends on how many other applicants have them. I would definitely send in your best writing sample -- at most schools, such supplements are reviewed by their respective departerment (ie, music goes to music profs, theatre to theatre profs, etc), so i'm guessing yours would be sent to the English dept. if the prof who reviews it likes it, he or she will send it back to the admissions committee, and it will be added to your file. if the prof doesn't like it, he or she will toss it, and the admissions committee will never see it. The admissions committee knows that all supplements they see, have been reviewed and are of good quality - thus helping your app. in other words, it can't possibly hurt!

Could my writing supplement be a paper I wrote for my english class or does it have to be a paper written outside of school?

Since it's a supplement, it could be anything you want. Just pick whatever you're the proudest of!
