I was wondering about my D's chances about receiving a merit scholarship and entrance into the honors program. She'll be applying this January for RD. Here are her stats:

GPA: ~3.6, but her school doesn't tell the student, (will they tell the colleges?) her average is about A-. they don't provide class rank either. (students are already competitive enough)
SAT: 1st time: 640m, 800cr, 700w
2nd time: 770m, 720cr, 730w
(best is 2300/2400 or 1570/1600)
SATII's: She took bunches, but best are USHist. 700 and physics 750
AP's: US History 5, English Lit. 4, English Lang. 4
AP classes taken/taking: US History, German, Latin, and AB Calculus

She's an excellent runner (800m group champion, etc.), and has an interest in Chinese. Will they take ec's into consideration?

I think she's got a good shot at money. Denison was giving out a ton of merit money in 2005, but last 2006's figures looked lower to me. So, I'm not really sure.

Can you clarify when she will be enrolling? Is it fall 2007?

Also, your school should be willing to provide her with an unofficial transcript. She should have that for college interviews anyway.

Be sure she snags an interview with an admissions person at Denison. They are available either on campus - or they travel around. Call and ask. I think that helps a lot with scholarships.

They definitely take ECs into consideration. She should have a resume put together too.

I don't know anything about athletic recruiting though...

I agree---I think she has an excellent chance at getting a merit scholarship from Denison. Is she interested in running track in college? If so, she should contact the coach ASAP. They are typically very interested in hearing from athletes who are considering the school, and IME will also give an honest and realistic appraisal of what the team is like, what the demands would be, and how she would fit in, and it would be even better if she could visit. My DD is an athlete and is now working in the office, helping a lot with recruiting, and all those personal contacts really do make a difference. Make sure she knows that every single contact, from the first email to all the phone calls will probably be documented!
As for your final ?, yes they will consider ec's and general interests and personality....one thing we really like about Denison is that even though they are focused on academics, they are also very focused on the "whole person" and want a student body that has interesting and diverse interests and talents outside the classroom.

My daughter was accepted early decision for Denison's class of 2011. She recieved a merit scholarship, with a GPA of a 3.7 and a 1940 SAT as well as a well rounded resume. Good luck to your daughter

i'll email the coach(es) soon! i just sent in my application yesterday. wow. such a relief. (I'm not actually that good of a runner, but decent enough).

I'm the one applying, btw, my d was just using the sn for a bit.
