Visited UNC last week. Could not find a reason not to like UNC Chapel HIll. Are we missing anything?
Daughter got admitted in UNC Chapel Hill, CMU, Case Western, U Mich, U Pitt, Kenyon and OSU. Looking into getting broad based liberal arts courses with coursed needed to get good coverage for med school and MCAT requirements.
Can someone help us in getting good perspective and help us select a good school?
We are not counting money as a criteria at this point.
You are not missing anything. It’s a great school! My daughter is an out of state student and loves it there. It is the perfect combination of very strong academics, internships, research, community, school spirit, etc. My D is taking all of the prerequisites for medical school however at this point she is not calling herself premed. Congrats on all of your D’s great acceptances!
Will you ever have two children in college at the same time? If so, you may qualify for financial aid.
Whether the school is worth it or not will depend on your family. If you can do it without hardship, then yes it is worth it. As I mentioned UNC is the perfect combination of school spirit, community, academics etc all rolled into one. My daughter loves her professors, is close with them, and has had two research positions so far and an unbelievable internship coming up this summer. I can’t say enough about this school- it’s amazing.
Your daughter has a lot of great options. Are you instate for any?
My daughter was also accepted to OSU and Pitt with merit. We visited Pitt twice and I liked it very much but my daughter did not. We did not visit OSU. She also got money from Lehigh.
I have no regrets about giving up the merit money to these schools ( we don’t have a money tree in our yard lol). My friends daughter is very happy at OSU.
Did you attend accepted students day? Have you visited the other schools? What is your D thinking?
@JoyGrace I want to give a better answer to your question about whether UNC is worth it at full cost. I think UNC is an amazing school and my daughter is thriving there, but the decision to be full pay has to be based on what is best for your family. If a family can be full pay with no loans except maybe for the Stafford loans, then to me that is fine. I would compare the costs of all schools and decide what you can afford to pay and what your daughter likes about each school. UNC is going to be very different than Kenyon and Case W. As I mentioned, you do have a good instate option. Good luck! Please let me know if you have any more questions.
@JoyGrace: I think the critical question posed by @twogirls is this: “What is your D thinking?” followed by: “Have you visited the other schools?” Admitted students day was what sold us on UNC; but if your daughter can compare different schools by visits within a relatively close time frame, then she should do so. There may be aspects of tOSU, for example, that might benefit her (honors program/college, perhaps?) along with the in-state tuition benefit, especially if she is looking at medical school tuition down the road.
To put it another way: Is it worth it to you to pay $45,000+ for OOS COA at UNC-CH, if you could get a sufficiently comparable college experience at lower cost at tOSU? The answer to that question is going to be unique for each family.
I am a professor, a graduate of Oxford (UK) and UVA, and, accordingly, place a premium on exceptional education.
For what it is worth, UNC is easily my daughter’s top choice, as well as my top choice. This is not a matter of lack of opportunities; rather, we bleed Carolina Blue. This is a most exceptional university, from whom we are eagerly awaiting a decision!
My daughter is a very motivated student and will do well in all of these colleges. We, as parent want to give her the best opportunity. She wants to be a doctor eventually. But in due course we want her to develop a well rounded individual. She is in honors program at both Pitt and OSU. I believe that a good college provide you a platform. This is why we are more inclined to Case, CMU and UNC. A professor at UNC put it this way - “Prepare for the career for what you would do if you don’t choose to go to Med School”. This is what our core thinking is.
UNC is an excellent option if you feel comfortable with the cost. As I mentioned earlier you have several good options which can be discussed in detail as a family. Best of luck!
@JoyGrace: Both UNC and CMU are well-regarded, and your daughter will get a good education at either. The respective campuses are quite different, of course (I have visited CMU with another child); so if money is not a consideration then I think it’s really a question of where your daughter will be most comfortable.
I am a Carolina alum and think it is absolutely an incredible place. If you can afford it, and she feels it is her first choice, I would not hesitate to send her. Congrats!
My son is a sophmore at UNC. He loves it there. One option is call financial aid. If you call them, they really try working with you on the financial aid side. We had to do that this year and they gave him a grant which really helped out! We bleed carolina blue at our house
