I am Iranian. On my apply Texas application I put Asian because there was no option middle eastern. I also speak Farsi and Turkish and I put that on my application. I know it's silly to think race would help me get in, but I know that colleges today are looking to be more diverse. So I was wondering if you guys think my race and ability to speak two other languages would help me get in? Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated

Speaking 3 languages is a plus. Minority status is not really a meaningful category. Schools look for Underrepresented minorities.

But considering A&M only has like a what? 4% asian population?

I’m sure it’d atleast help a little bit.

What I’ve heard though is that they only like underrepresented minorities, and I’m not sure they would consider Asian a underrepresented. Do you think they will see that I am Iranian because when most people think Asian, Iranian isn’t the first thing that comes in mind

Besides, what I’ve heard a&m accepts mostly white people and the left over space is filled with URM’s. There are very few Asians accepted to a&m because they are not a URM and usually all the Asians they accept are in the top 10%. It seems harder for a review admit Asian to be accepted than a review admit white person

Wrong. Asians at A&M are an URM. The reason they “accept mostly white people” is because the majority of the applicant pool is white (and from Texas).

Not to stereotype too much, but a large portion of minorities are liberal and looking for a more liberal setting, thus they prefer UT as their school of choice within Texas (plus, Austin is a nicer city).

That may be true, but what I’ve heard is that a&m is now trying to recruit minority students in order to create a more diverse community. The thing is though it seems like the only minorities they “recruit” are African americans and Hispanics. Not that it’s bad to do that, but I think they don’t give enough consideration to Asian students. It seems they assume most Asians are the typical 4.0/2400 sat and therefore, they do not feel the need to heavily recruit them because all of them should be accepted in top 10% or as academic admits and if there is a Asian who is not like that they would suffer because of it
