I will apply as a freshman for Fall 2010, and though I have relatively decent stats, I think I won't get in to any of the UC's that I want (Davis, Irvine, SB, and of course LA and B).

That being said, I was wondering that if I get into one of the lower UC's such as Santa Cruz, Riverside, or Merced, can I transfer into a higher UC--perhaps even Berkeley or LA if I keep my grades up? Also, I plan to go to Medical School so I would probably take classes which are heavy on science and what not, and was wondering if these are "impacted" majors since I am a transfer

In case this confuses anyone, let me clarify:

-I would go into UC Santa Cruz
-I would transfer there before junior year, or whatever is possible
-I would want to transfer into science classes (if they are not "impacted")
-Also, if this is possible and I am able to do it, when I graduate--will my degree be from the UC I transferred to, or will it be something different?

Thank You very much, if you were able to keep up with it

Yes, you can, but you will have higher priority as a CC transfer. Universities see it this way: if you are already attending a 4-year institution, you have lower priority than someone that doesn’t already have access to one (CC and HS students in this case). Therefore, you need to make sure that your GPA is stellar and you need to prove to them that you are an outstanding candidate.

That said, consider a CC. You will save a crap ton of money and you will have 1st priority in the admission process.

Your diploma will have the school you graduated from on it.

But if I live in Sacramento, will I still be able to transfer to UC Berkeley from a local CC right? I just wont be able to get a transfer admission gurantee (though I dont think UCB) has that.
Will it affect my chances of getting into Medical School?

Yes, you can transfer to UCB from your local CC. No, UCB doesn’t have a TAG program, but you can always do TAG with the other campuses you are interested and apply to UCB and UCLA. I think that you will have a better chance of getting into those two schools as a CC transfer rather than a UC transfer, but that’s just my opinion.

You won’t be able to get a transfer guarantee to UCB whether you transfer from a UC or CC. There are transfer admission guarantees (TAG) with CC’s and all the UC’s except LA and Berkeley. My advice would be to just go to a CC if your intent is on transferring. IMO, there is no point in wasting money as well as potentially being unhappy at a 4 year when you could have gone to a CC and transferred.

KMA-You really don’t need to keep “bumping” your post. As long as it’s still on page 1, people will keep responding if they have anything to add. Also, there is no reason for you to be desperate, SkWz and I just answered your question.

Relax, just apply and hang tight till decisions come out. When decisions come out, evaluate your options. I think the main point is that you consider CC an option if you don’t accepted to your preferred colleges. If you truly believe that you have no chance getting accepted to any of the UC’s you listed, I’d seriously consider CC, but that’s just my opinion.

well thank you haha (the reason I bump is because I have had multiple posts in the past in which only one person responded, so you all can just imagine how satisfied I was-hah), I am very grateful, but i still have a few concerns

so lets say i went to a cc, and transfered to UCB or got a TAG to UCSD (hypothetically)

when applying to Medical School, will they find out if I transferred from a CC to a UC

Also, will I not be able to get into my desired major as a transfer?

And, how will classes work?–> Would I take the same classes in a CC as I would as a freshman at a UC, or do I have to take special classes to be eligible for a UC transfer

Yes they will know you transferred from a CC (I believe) since you finished some of the requirements at the CC. I’ve seen lots of pre-med students at my CC, some with their bachelors in another field and just finishing up some requirements. I always assumed that GPA was very important while what you major in has little importance for medical school. If that’s the case, I suggest you take whatever requirements you need for medical school and choose a major that has a transfer high acceptance rate. Since you’re pre-med, you will probably need to spend at least two years since you’ll need general chemistry and o-chem. The time you spend at a CC doesn’t really matter since you will be considered a junior transfer.

You can’t get into any of the mid or upper tier UCs and are worried about med school?

No one cares if you went to a CC and transferred. They just care what your GPA was and where you transferred. Going to a lower tier UC like UCR isn’t going to somehow look better than a CC.

I agree 100% with Hijynx. What you should really do is speak to your guidance counselor at school and start looking at this website to get more familiar with the UC system: [University of California Systemwide Home](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu)

Note that UCR has a program if you want to go to UCLA med school. “Students admitted to the medical school phase of the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences attend UCR for the first two years of medical school and complete their medical training at UCLA.”

Not that it will do you any good now, but WHEN you do apply to med school, let me know. Assuming you and I both still read this forum (highly unlikely) I can try and get you a little help. My dad teaches some classes every now and then at the medical school, mostly does rounds a few times a year though with the students.

well the thing is, as a response to your earlier post–this is basically a back-up plan, I mean right now, I have a 3.8 UC GPA, and fairly decent stats–1900 sat and good ec’s–but I really have a feeling that I wont get into a good UC for some reason. Thanks alot for the offer, but I think when it comes time for med school, I should be set–my parents are also doctors–where does your father teach?
