Could someone please clarify?

I am an undergraduate engineering student. I want to get a Ph.D after graduation next year. I have family and friends that tell me I should just apply for Ph.D straight out of college since grades are good and I made my decision.

However I also heard it's not an option sometimes? I was looking at UIUC's requirement for Ph.D, they said [A Masters degree is required for admission to the Ph.D. program], does that mean they do not accept undergraduate applications for Ph.D ?

So how often does a student apply to Ph.D after undergrad? I do not want to get a masters first, because since I know I want a Ph.D, I rather know I will have funding instead of facing financial problems ( I rather get a job if I have to pay for graduate school myself).

I know it's long read but thank you very much if someone could help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What field are you in?

civil engineering

In engineering, generally, the MS is picked up on the way to getting a PhD at the same program. You should also be fully funded.

Some programs admit everyone into a self-funding masters pool (with a select few getting a full ride), then allow the top students to continue on for a PhD. The rest are let go after they get their MS.
