Could Someone please explain this to me about Freshman connection program?

I recieved this decision:

Thank you for your application for admission to the University of Maryland. While we cannot offer you admission for the Fall 2010 semester, we are impressed with all you have accomplished and we are pleased to offer you admission for the Spring 2011 semester which begins in January.

You can look forward to receiving an official decision letter which will contain detailed information about your admission and the variety of options available to you prior to your spring enrollment at the University of Maryland.

What exactly does this mean? will I have to wait until the Spring of 2011 to start college?
what do i do in the fall of 2010?

Freshman connection means that you can attend some classes in the fall, but they won’t have housing for you.

It means they liked our applications enough to accept us but not enough for them to admit us like normal students. No guaranteed on campus housing spring semester, and no housing first semester unless you commute and get it on your own. You take classes from 3-9 PM for the first semester basically, then they integrate you into the regular population second semester.

This kind of puts us in a tough spot. I, personally, don’t know what to do now. I wish they would have just either accepted or denied me.

you don’t have to take classes there in the fall. you can go to another school for a semester and then transfer there in the spring like a ‘normal’ student and just transfer your credits

this feels like it kind of sucks. UMD is my top choice, but now being put in this situation idk what to do. starting in the spring wont make me feel like a regular freshman. Does this mean i have absolutly no shot at engineering or business?

This program sucks. I would have been happier being denied admission than this. And @amarch53, I think you’d just go into Letter and Sciences and then try and make an appeal for the LEP’s sophomore year.

I get the feeling that this is the definition of “second class citizen.”

This is highly frustrating…

Does anyone have a ballpark price for Freshman Connection? “$TBD” is the only thing posted on the website.

freshman connection doesn’t offer you on campus housing you have to find off campus housing or commute

but u are still are allowed to take classes in the fall semester
you are still part of Maryland’s class of 2014

So that’s the only difference? No housing for the fall and different class times? I can still participate in everything fall students participate in? After freshman connec., do I get put into letters and sciences? Then maybe apply for a lep or different major after freshman year? Also, can anyone who’s done this program in the past post their experiences? How the classes were like? Was it frustrating commuting etc.? How was the social scene? Hard to make friends when most of the students already know each other from fall admission?

^^^^I second those questions. Any help would be appreciated. Also, how difficult is the off campus housing situation?

i have a friend who was admitted for freshman connection in 2007 she loves maryland and hasnt affected her ability to make friends at all… she can still participate in everything that fall students participate in… she did have an apartment off campus which i would think make the social scene a lot easier then those who commute

all the credits you earn in fall semester under freshman connection transfer

^ thanks for the answer. Also, how does going into freshman connection affect what majors you want to pursue after? Do you start your major later than everyone else? Does it hinder your chances of transferring into a lep? How many days of the week did your friend have class? I think that may play a huge role on whether people choose to commute or get a place outside campus.

maybe this sint a bad thing after all. atleast i didnt get flat out denied, and i just need a few days to let it settle. Atleast i can still be a terp 2014!

How are we supposed to find a place to live for a semester? Wouldn’t everything be year long leases?

^
Party house for those last couple of months.

this seems difficult for people out of state. everyone is saying i should be happy that i at least got in but for some reason i’m not. it doesn’t really feel like an acceptance. i think i’m going to confirm my enrollment and if anything go to a different school fall semester of 2010 and if i still want to go to UMD after the first semester somewhere else i’ll transfer. ugh i’m upset.

I got in to this also. I am slightly disappointed, but Maryland was not my first choice anyway. I wonder what the reasons were since some of my friends with same/similar scores/GPA got in.

I am really interested in hearing from someone who did this in previous years.

^ 3 of my friends with lower stats than me got in… Not saying anything bad about them though. I’m just really confused why this happened.

Two friends with lower stats got in as well. In LEP’s. Frustrating. I’d do community college for a semester, but I sort of really want to get out of the house.
