Could Someone please explain this to me about Freshman connection program?

i didn’t get waitlisted either. after sleeping on it and reading all of these forums i’m actually happy i even got in for spring. i have a very high GPA (almost a 3.9) but my SAT was only an 1150/1600 (1860/2400) and ACT of 25. i also only have 2 APs and a few honors classes throughout. i thought my essays were very creative and well written as well as my short answers, but who knows how much those really count. i think all of my community service & leadership positions is what got me in because i’m OOS, not a minority, and have no legacy. that seems to indicate that they do in fact look at the whole package instead of just the numbers. however, i can’t help but feeling that if i had gotten even 100 points higher on my SAT, i would have been accepted for fall or at least waitlisted. i’m deff not doing FC but i’m going to confirm my enrollment and go somewhere else in the fall and if i still want to go to CP, transfer in the spring. i’m still waiting on my first choice which is University of Delaware so my fingers are crossed.

Yeah @samjillian that sounds like a good plan. Reading up on who got in and who didn’t it all seems so random, there’s not much that distinguishes those who got in from those who didn’t get in for the fall. I think that all it takes for these admissions decisions to be denied is for the admissions officer to be having a bad day. This process is all subjective and not quantifiable and therefore the fate of our future is at the whim of some guy who couldn’t care less.

I’m not happy that this is happening, not by a long shot, but I guess I can live with it. I wonder if my parents will let me finish the basement and move in down there for a semester…

yeah i honestly hate the whole system of college apps. it’s not a fair game by any means and there’s barely any rhyme or reason to it. it ****es me off but then again everything happens for a reason and i’m glad that this wasn’t my absolute first choice (although it wasn’t far behind…) and @capthammer that could potentially be awesome haha

Samjillian: We are on the same page. Great that D got in (GPA below UMD avg acceptance, excellent class rank, ECs, essays, recs, and 26 ACT). Big accomplishment to even get in at all. D feels great about even the spring admit. It’s not a complete rejection. She may see you at Delaware – that’s one of her other top choices!

after reading this and a good night’s sleep, i agree with capthammer. when i first read my decision, i was shocked, upset, and really angry. i felt like my entire life was rejected and i wasn’t good enough. but now, in the end, i honestly feel like it really was just a random thing. the admissions conselor for my area came to my school and i asked him a question. who knows maybe he didn’t like me and remembered that, or maybe he was just fighting with his wife when he read my file. i don’t know. but whatever, it wasn’t meant to be and i’m getting more and more excited with my other choices. and if those don’t work out, i still can go to cp.

^^^ Well put.

Same for me, except I’m doing a semester of community college then going to UMD for 7/8ths of what college would have been. I like the 7/8ths thing. It makes it sounds a lot easier. But as long as I get to sleep in later than 6:45 AM I think I’ll be ok.

I see several folks are also interested in U Del that got spring admits to UMD (this is the case for my son)…do you think it is easier to get into U Del Fall than into UMD Fall? I worry that those that got waitlisted for the Fall (my son for example) will not have the luck they want with U Del either. What are others’ thougths on this?

I didn’t personally apply to University of Delaware, but if it’ll help any here’s some statistics about the people in my school who applied to each college and their admissions decisions. Hope this helps.

UMD - Green squares are admitted for the fall, diamonds are admitted for the spring, x’s are denied admission. I’m the circle and I’m in for the spring.

University of Delaware - Strange mix, I don’t know what to make of it. I guess it depends on your son’s GPA/SAT.

@LINYMOM when i read your post about your daughter i honestly went into my mom’s room and asked if it was her! haha so yes we are deff on the same page! even more of a coincidence that she is also considering Delaware.

@penmom, yes i do believe it is easier to get into UDel fall than UMD fall. UMD was my reach school and i got in for spring, but i did not even get waitlisted for fall. Delaware is not considered a reach for me, it’s more of a match. i also had one of those scatterplots for my school and for UMD i was kind of in between but for Delaware i’m shown pretty much at the top with past acceptances. If your son got waitlisted for fall, that’s an indication that his stats are impressive and i’m sure good enough for Udel if mine are since i didn’t even get waitlisted. Another thing to consider is that they take all 3 sections of the SAT which UMD does not and they reaallllyy stress the importance of your senior year courseload. i don’t know his stats but i really don’t think he will have a problem. good luck to him though! i’m soooooooo anxious to hear… it’s been my top choice since before junior year!

Same as samjillian for us too! (where else did you apply? D’s 3rd top choice was American - very different. We are still waiting for SUNY Bing also, but she’d much rather go to Del or Amer. Already admitted at UConn.)

Our Naviance shows D’s GPA and SAT below avg acceptance to UMD from our school (not enough ACT to compare). On the UDel scattergram, her stats exactly match the avg from our school - both GPA and ACT.

linymom, i’m not familiar with naviance…my daughter really wants to go to u del but just got rejected (not even offered spring) at maryland so i am VERY worried about delaware now…we are from new england , she has a 3.6 gpa unweighted, 2 ap’s, the rest ALL honors . Her SAT’s are what worries me. 1700/2400. she has LOTS of ec’s, good rec’s ,we visited the school twice and she had an alumni interview locally… i’m nervous that the weeding out system due to the extremely high number of applications will put her in an automatic no pile because of her sat’s…

LINYMOM, it’s OT for this thread, but what is wrong with Binghamton? My D got in OOS and is very interested in going. You can PM me if you don’t want to post on this thread.

My D wants to visit school to make her final decision. Can someone give me the name of a couple decent hotels close by to UMD

has anyone received the actual letter? i kind of want to get mine just for more closure…

/anyone called the admissions office and asked why they were spring’d?

i’m still waiting on the official letter as well. my mom called today and after being placed on hold for 25 minutes she got to talk to someone and asked about the waitlist. i was not even put on the waitlist, just given spring 2011. she was told that unless it says you are originally on the fall 2010 waitlist in the decision letter (/ what was online) then you cannot be on it and the decisions are final. not sure why i got springd tho. record number of kids at my school this year. it’s a shock for all of us who usually view maryland as a safety

Weren’t the letters supposed to be sent out today? I’m guessing that if we add 3 days to when they sent out the letters that’s when we’ll get the packet.

Seems like decisions are pretty final, but I’d be interested to hear any more stories about calling the admissions office if anyone has any.

Since I have so many friends going to UMD I’ll probably be up there visiting (my own college) for a lot of the firsts semester anyways. Hopefully it’ll help integrate me better 2nd semester. So yeah, that’s an idea.

i wasn’t even put on the waitlist either.

no idea why i was spring’d too… i thought my app was good. i’m half-curious to see the final numbers from umd. so many people got rejected and spring’d at my school too. literally, i talked about it in every class, before school and after school. everyone was so angry and grumpy. usually, like no one gets rejected.

i thought they sent them out saturday but i could be wrong.

I’ll be looking forward to the packet. Hopefully it has all the information in it.

Just updated my Facebook status - “Josh Souders is going to the University of Maryland…sort of.” Congrats, everyone. This may not feel like an acceptance at first, but you made it in. Maybe it’s because my friends seemed to brainwash me into thinking this, but this is an achievement. You all did well, you just have bad luck.

I spoke to an admisssions person at UMD today…not what I wanted to hear. She said that last year no one from the waitlist was offered admission for the fall semester. Zilch!! She said no way to know what happens this year, but wanted to pass along the historical data. She said those spring’d and waitlisted Fall can and should attend an upcoming open house for accepted students. There will be a breakouty session in the afternoon for Freshman Connection. Also no waitlist offers (if there are any) will be conveyed until after 5/1. She also said there is no order of who is where on the waitlist.

So people don’t have to dig around for the link -
