Could someone tell me about the student health insurance plan?

NYU has me automatically enrolled in a $823 Student Hlth.Ins.Plan-Comp. plan. Could someone tell me more about the plan. Just liike, what it covers and advise me on whether or not the plan is a good deal. I'm a canadian so I don't have any health insurance in the states, and i took a look at the NYU Health Insurance information pdf thing but I honestly didnt understand anything it said.

Here is a link to the Student Health Center website where you can find both a summary of SHC benefits and a PDF of the brochure from the general health insurance provider NYU contracts with for non-SHC health care:

[NYU > Student Health Center > About SHC > Student Health Insurance](<a href=“Health and Wellness”>Health and Wellness)

The NYU Student Health Center provides NYU students and employees with certain limited health care benefits at no additional cost or for a small co-pay. You are also REQUIRED to carry an approved health insurance policy to cover emergency and major medical costs. All students are automatically billed for a basic policy from the NYU contracted insurance provider. If you are already covered through a parent’s policy you can waive the NYU contracted provider policy if NYU approves your policy as being sufficient. Please note, however, that if you are covered by Kaiser-Permanente or another regional provider that does not operate in the NYC area you will have to buy the NYU policy.

I have always waived my daughter’s NYU insurance because she is covered under my plan. But just for your information, a trip to the health center for things like a sore throat, cold, flu, stomach virus, etc is free. Bloodwork, throat cultures, student is not billed. For prescriptions, they give you starter doses for some of the more known antibiotics. You can use your insurance for whatever copays needed for other meds. Anything that requires a higher level of service such as a specialty, CAT scans, MRI or a trip to the hospital is not free.
They also provide free of charge, 10 sessions of counseling if your student feels they need any help along those lines.

This website outlines some of the NO cost to matriculated students as well as services that are provided for a minimal cost. All without having the schools insurance plan.

Hi. I likewise need input on the health insurance. My son will be dorming at NYU although we live in Bergen County, NJ (roughly 30-35 mins away). He is covered by my insurance and since we live so close (it’s like me when I used to work right by NYU area and commuted), I’m thinking I can waive the NYU insurance. Is this advisable?

waitin,

Please look at the NYU link:

Consider the conditions for a waiver and also note milkandsugar’s points above about what services are covered by NYU’s SHC even for those with insurance plan waivers.

Of course, if your son is covered under your plan and the plan coverage is good, then it is not a bad idea to save on the additional NYU health insurance plan fees.

I live about 60 minutes away from campus and I waived the insurance. I dorm at campus. When I checked with my insurance company, there were a lot of specialists that were in the Manhattan area that were in-network. I go to the NYU SHC more than I would like (was hospitalized once at NYU Tisch, I used counseling services after some family drama, etc) and I have not been treated any differently by the SHC staff. My insurance has also been quick with processing the claims. So weigh the pros and cons carefully.

So, the SHC is open to all students, regardless of whether they are on NYU or family insurance coverage?

^^Yes. Please look at the links posted. All the answers are right there.

Thank you for all the input and the links. No cost for basic services is a pleasant surprise! I will call and see if they accept our insurance in case my son would need other services and call my insurance as well. I know there are in-network doctors in NYC but most will accept new patients only if they are the primary care physician; and my insurance says if it’s an emergency hospital visit, it’s covered – but I’ll make sure again. Thanks!
