Could son's Facebook post have jeopardized admissions?

My son got into UC Berkeley Regents, UCLA Regents. Immediately after he got into Berkeley, he posted on his Instagram bio “UC Berkeley 2019,” and updated his Facebook education bio to say UC Berkeley. This update probably happened about a week before admissions came out for privates.

Now, I know nothing can be done now. But he didn’t get into a single private, including Michigan, NYU, USC, or any of the Ivy’s he applied to. Just for the sake of wondering, could that post he made have affected his admissions, or would admissions not be checking FB/Instagram 1 week before decisions?

The colleges you’ve listed receive so many applications that I am almost certain that they won’t have time to look through social media profiles during deliberations.

Michigan deferred/waitlisted/rejected numerous top applicants this year who have likely failed to show interest.

USC seemed to have a mild case of Tuft’s syndrome, as many applicants with sub-par GPAs and scores were admitted and those above the mean were not. This is becoming increasingly popular among schools that want to raise their yield rate.

Which department did your son apply to at NYU? If he applied to Stern, he’d be facing competition at about the lower-tier ivy caliber.

And for the ivies… well, they’re the ivies. They’re a reach for practically every unhooked student.

Congrats on the UCB and UCLA acceptances, and with Regents too!

Not rude, but they have more important things to do than read your son’s post. Definitely, those are top schools so that could be a chance for being rejected. Congratulations to your son for getting in UCBerkeley!

Right, and it’s far harder to get in to UMich if you are OOS vs. in-state (and difficulty depends on major/college/interests as well).

Oh good grief. These other schools don’t have the time to comb thousands of applicants’ FB profiles and then do a “gotcha.”

College admissions departments do not have the time to go through every candidates facebook profile the week before decisions go out. Sounds like he has a great school he is thrilled to attend so things worked out well. (PS - UM is not a private college, it is an OOS state school)

No. A week prior to decisions coming out? Absolutely not. Do I think it’s in the realm of possibility that adcoms looks at social media earlier in the process? Well, I wouldn’t put it past one to google something that seemed questionable and I always advise kids to be smart about their social media period. However, others are right, these college are swamped and they certainly aren’t going through them the week prior when decisions have already been made and they are knee deep in transfer applicants who have later applications dates generally.
