Could this be a mistake?

I used the AU Portal to see my admissions acceptance letter. But when I went to financial aid, I got a 5500 dollar loan and that’s it. My stats are above AU’s average (31 ACT, 3.92 GPA, 10 APs) and my family makes around 60k. Could the website have an error? I haven’t gotten my letter yet to confirm, but I’m freaking out and just want to know if it’s possible. Thanks

Unfortunately, anything is possible. However, there seems to be so many issues with the website that no one can say what is true and what is not. Hopefully you will get the letter shortly and this will be resolved. I hope the same is true for us.

@nebraskagal I kind of want to say no unfortunately. Times like this that AU financial aid sucks, but that is very unusual that you got only that when your family makes that. I knew with what my parents made that it kind of makes sense that I got that same financial package (even though they’re sending two kids to school at the same time)

Thank you guys for your responses! I’m waiting for my letter eagerly but I will definitely contact AU if it’s true

It would be very strange if that’s all you got. Heck your stats are better than mine and I got a small scholarship. I haven’t got my letter yet either - I’m just going by what’s on the AU portal. It’s kinda scary really, with all the problems they’re having with their site. It makes me wonder if what they have listed for my FA might be wrong. Oh gosh, that would be horrible if I got the FA package in the mail and it was totally different that what’s posted on the portal. Kinda makes you wonder though…

My D got the same amount. American uses the CSS profile and looks at your family’s home equity and other assets that are non-retirement. Additionally they look at any money in your name.

But my EFC was around 4,000, we owe more than half of what our house is worth, my parents have no savings (they’re not good with money, which is really unfortunate for me) and I have about 1000 in the bank.

My daughter got exactly the same award on the website and in the letter. She received much more money at other colleges. We didn’t know what to think either. Did you update your CSS and other forms with 2012 taxes? Ours are not finished until this week. I don’t know whether that might have any impact or not.

@GoldenFinch - and it’s the exact opposite for me. If what’s on the portal is true, then I’m getting much more than I ever would’ve expected. Plus, my father didn’t even send in the NCP until like March 12th, so I was really worried that it was gonna mess everything up. However, neither of my parents have any assets and they both make under $30,000/year so I’m sure that’s the reason why I’m receiving so much.
Still, it makes no sense why Nebraskagal wouldn’t be receiving any merit money with her stats being what they are. Even if her essay wasn’t the greatest, her GPA, course rigor and test scores should make up for that.

Is size of family an issue? Is nebraskagirl an only but jennee one of many?

I’m not sure what you mean but my sister is in college at a public 4 year

Your stats are very good. You should call and appeal and have them review again.

Thank you. I literally have no clue what’s going on. I’m in student council, NHS, Spanish honor society, Spanish club, senior/junior class board, founded children of Africa at my school, studied abroad my sophomore year, work 3 jobs, have an internship in my local mayoral campaign. I don’t get what I did wrong

@youdon’tsay - I understand the point you’re trying to make. My point is simply from the “merit” side of things. Based on Nebraskagal’s stats, she should be receiving some type of merit aid. My stats are 3.85 GPA, 6 AP’s and 29 ACT, and I got a merit scholarship. She’s saying that she received nothing, and that makes no sense.
@Nebraskagal - I’m assuming that your 3.92 GPA is unweighted, not weighted???

Do not think you did anything wrong. All schools are very competitive. The acceptance
process sometimes does not make any sense. One student can be accepted at a school and
not another, were a similar student may be accepted at the opposite colleges. Do not worry
were ever you end up I am sure you will do great.

My schools weighting process is really complicated so I’m not quite sure what my weighted is but you’re correct

This is such bull crap. I don’t know what was going on with admissions. I got into the spring semester and the Washington mentor ship program. No financial aid at all. I really don’t know what is going on here. AU was my safety school. Whatever

AU does not guarantee to meet full need and generally doesn’t. Only 25% got gift aid-schoalrships, averaging about $11K i none series. They also use PROFILE, not FAFSA in determining need, and what your family is expected to pay may be way up there in that methodology. Did you run some numbers through the NPC? Does your family own a business? Have a lot of home equity? Is there a non custodial parent involved? Those can all impact need under PROFILE greatly.

If you are awaiting packages from PROFILE schools, they may all be more in line with American than with what your EFC suggests. Do run some NPCs and see what they come out to be.

As for merit aid, you can’t count on that. It’s not a straight stats thing. Even fewer students, about $15% got merit money.

Do look at what your affordable options are as well as the high priced ones. Hopefully, the news will be good, at least better. Good luck.

No since she got into the washington program you’re not exactly an actual student at least for the first semester which they never give any type of financial aid to them anyway
