could this be my hook

lets start off by saying i am no ivy leaguer. i have a B+/A- pretty bad SATs 1180/1600 (510 V, 670m). i most likely want to end up at penn state, U delaware, or syracuse. so i was talking to my parents about my "hook" and they think i have a great one. For the past 3 summers i been working with kids with special needs at a summer camp. How the camp works is each counselor is paired with a child to almost coach/ encourage to help them grew. i was paired last year with twins. These kids were the most lovable kids ever. the job required hardwork but each day i came home with a feeling of enrichment. I felt great knowing that i helped make these twins have an awesome summer. How do you college guru's view my hook? do u think i should use this or brainstorm another?

That is nothing close to a hook. I have 2000 hours of community service and thats not even a hook!! lol

thats impressive 2000 hrs of community service..... also last yr i organized an event that drew close to 250 people and raised 10,000 dollars to help benefit suicide victims in israel and i was in the newspaper.... is that any better?

primitivefuture: 2000 hours of Community Service IS a hook, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is just jealous. Colleges will realize what a huge time commitment that is, and most all colleges want people who will spend time improving the world in which we live.

Actually, if you can emphsize your work in an essay, it might work. Keep in mind guys that he is applying to lower-tier schools, which don't look at huge commitments for hooks and just want to look for a solid background. I'd say he has a great chance.

Sinbid- thanks for the positive post.... i know i am not going to an ivy and i realize that my schools are much more realistic for me..... i think that either of those 2 possible hooks will help me separate myself from students with the same stats as me..... which one did you like better the walk for terror victims or the special needs job

Ericg1 I think both of the things you listed are great, although Im not sure which one should be your main thing. Keep thinking about it....you know better than us of your achievements.

thanks man.... i just need to find that thing that seperates me... i want to major in finance at PSU.... i am an average white kid from the suburbs with good grades and a decent SATs... the disadvantage i have is i am in a competitive school... i take the toughest courses and still pull off B+ and miss 20 percentile (i am 126/593).... and it stinks because everyone in manalapan, nj apply to the same schools.. i really want PSU or U delaware and there is a chance i may not get into either

Eric- Only percentile after 10% that is significant is 25% :).

Your relatively safe.

seriously..even 1000 hours of community service is a hook

yea i hope so... does any one know the stats for the PSU finance program... i want it soo badly... also another hook is i came up with a business strategory for best buy that may be used throughout the NY-NJ region

you plan on listing all these under EC's right? you should.....and then just use one as a HOOK

yea so now i have 3) choices..... A) best buy business plan, B) special needs summer job C) terror victim walk..... lets vote for your favorite one

A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

hahaha theres is alot of anti-best buy people (PSU has one on campus)and also alot of anti-israel.... so mayb B) is the most safe

I love best buy. I get azn deals during easter/thanksgiving

anti-best buy???? why would you want to go to that school then are you a hippy?

I vote for special needs summer job. That represents a much more substantial commitment and achievement than the other two you mention.

IMO, you are awesome both to have undertaken and then to have succeeded at that job.

Best of luck to you! :)

eh i am moderate/liberal.... but i am not gonna start talking politics cuz idc anymore... lets get bak to the post... PSU rocks and in regards to the anti best buy check out http://bestbuysux.org/

thanks Adad.... i love that job i start again in a month and i asked the supervisor if i can have the most challenging kid
