Could Transferring as a Pre-Med Major Hurt my GPA?

I currently go to a small all-women’s school and I’ve excelled quite well here but I found out that no one has ever got into a U.S. medical school after graduating here. My teachers say that it’s because not a lot of people have applied to med school and go on to get their PhD’s instead. I also found out that they slow the science courses down like organic chem, gen chem, etc, (which will be on the MCAT) because they try to accommodate the science majors who aren’t going to med school but require chemistry and what not. This has lead me to want to transfer but I have a 3.99 GPA currently, Im a first semester sophomore and I would be transferring in the fall as a junior. Should I risk leaving this school to prepare myself more for the MCAT and medical school? Also, any recommendations to where I should apply (new England schools preferably)?

In purely practical terms, you are likely to have finished chem & organic chem by the end of this year. “Slowing” down the teaching is not a problem, as long as all the material is actually covered. The MCAT material is very, very standardized.

As all of the highly selective women’s colleges have a strong record of sending many graduates to medical school, I’m guessing that your current school is not one of the familiar names, and (again, guessing) is perhaps not the most academically rigorous college going. If so, transferring to a more rigorous college could well affect your GPA. On the other hand (assuming you stay the course over this year), that strong base would let you keep a still-high GPA.

Imo, a college that has not had any students accepted to medical school is a red flag, if that is the course you are set on. As to which college to transfer to, that is harder: would need more information, starting with finances, level of selectivity, what you want from the other parts of your college experience.
