This is my email to emory that I am planning on sending. Could you tell me if this is okay? Like I don't come off to strong or too rude or anything? Please help me. Thank you!

Dear. Office of Admissions.

Would it be possible for me to switch my application from RD to ED II?
Emory has always been my first choice. Ive not applied to any school for ED1. The only reason I waited to apply RD to Emory was because I felt that my test score at that time was not good enough for Emory. I studied hard and pulled my score from 1600s to 2000s. I applied RD since I was planning to retake SAT but I felt that there was no other way to show my interest better than to apply for the binding decision. Therefore, I would like to switch my application from RD to ED. Emory University has been my dream school for high school years and I feel that only the binding decision can tell you how much passion I have for your school. Thank you~

Hi,
I think your e-mail is fine, however, I looked up Emory’s deadlines and the deadline for Early Decision was Nov. 1. I don’t think ED is an option at this point. Good luck. I hope you get in.

^Actually the EDII deadline was January 1. You’ve missed it. RD was January 15th.

I wouldn’t worry about not getting in if you don’t do EDII. We visited Emory a few months ago and at the information session they were quite clear that while ED will give you a little extra edge (they like the show of interest and commitment at Emory), applying ED won’t get an otherwise unqualified student in and not doing ED won’t keep a qualified student out. Are you right on the edge in terms of admission stats?

hi! thank u for the reply. I don’t know where I am…I have 3.7~8 uw gpa and 2010 superscored sat but I think my stats are below average for an asian applicant and in general…I applied on 15th but I am trying to see if I can switch my app to Early II by sending that email…:(

If you haven’t sent that email already, I would suggest not going into the reason as you do. I don’t think they will evaluate candidates on who feel more strongly about the school – ED is the first choice now for everyone who is applying that way, so it’s not a question of yield for the school, which is where showing interest really can help.

If you didn’t make it obvious in your application essay that Emory is and was always your first choice, then you can send that message to the admissions office as follows:

Call the admissions office – most of the people answering phones at colleges are students or alums – and tell them that E is your absolutely first choice and if you are admitted you will certainly attend, and ask them how you make that clear at this point.

Write an email and ask that it be put in your file that if you are admitted you will certainly attend and that Emory is absolutely your first-choice school and WHY (talk about why you love it so much).

This is good:

I would stay away from labyrinthine explanations about RD/ED, forget that now, it’s too late. Just find a way to drive home the point that if you are admitted that you are a sure thing in terms of enrollment.

(have you interviewed? If not, you should request an interview with admissions)

Good luck!

(or you could always write to Jimmy Carter and ask him to put in a good word for you. :))

I would not explain that you did not do ED because of low SATs the way you do. You could explain that your second set of scores reflect your abilities much better than the first, when you were still unfamiliar with the format.

I don’t know whether your email will have an effect, but it should not hurt.

pingpong, what we’re saying is that it’s too late to switch your application to ED as the ED application deadline passed over two weeks ago. So while you can go ahead and send this email if you want, it’s not going to make a difference. You’ll just have to try your best with RD.

Also, applying ED does not always increase your chances of admission very much. ED applicants tend to be admitted at a higher rate, but often that is because the applicants in the ED pool are almost all good fits for the school they are applying to. In such a self-selecting group, it’s natural that a higher percentage of them will be accpeted, than in an RD group where applications can be all over the place in terms of qualifications.

I just didn’t want them to think that I took advantage of having longer time to prepare for my app and just suddenly changed my mind. I wanted to tell them that they were always my first choice. I guess its kinda redundant but they did switch my app! :D

I actually figured they would, if you applied Jan 15. I was confused by some of the responses. Certainly it wouldn’t hurt to ask, so, good for you.
