could upenn be the best ivy?

of course I am biased because it is the only ivy I applied and was accepted to...but does anyone else agree that Upenn is the best, or at least a really really amazing school?

it just feels like there is no better place for me...it has the ivy name, but at my preview weekend, absolutely no one seemed stuck up and too smart to function, in fact, greek life is a hugee thing on campus

in addition, the academics and opportunities seem limitless. i can do several minors, study abroad, submatriculate into other schools at Penn, find jobs, internships, externships, so soso many things that are nearly readily available at penn

the reason why i believe it could be the best ivy, or at least the best ivy for me, is because i wanted to be at a school that it very renown and has premier academics, but simultaneously, somewhere where i can meet nice, normal, well-rounded people who maintain a "work hard, play hard" mentality. phildadelphia, while it is not the absolute greatest city, appears to be a multifaceted city where penn students have fun and take advantage of the job offerings around them.

penn doesn't have its nose up in the air as much as harvard, princeton, and yale...cornell is too severe and too cold, dartmouth is too liberal artsy and too small, columbia is in a terrible area and too boring.

am my ideas correct? of course most of them are based on my impressions and things i've been told for years, but please, anyone who agrees with me, feel free to gloat about penn!

oh and please don’t correct my grammar/spelling in this post…i typed this really quickly

“columbia is in a terrible area and too boring”

How in the world is NYC boring lol? (I got into Penn and rejected by Columbia, but would pick Columbia over Penn if I had gotten in)

^Agree. I got accepted by Penn (most likely attending) and waitlisted by Columbia but I would totally go to Columbia if taken off the waiting list. Then again, I don’t know if you can really compare them. I mean, Columbia is known for its culture and strong liberal arts/humanities while Penn is known for its pre-med/sciences, in addition to business of course.

You speak as if Penn doesn’t have any stuck up people and as if greek life and intelligence are mutually exclusive. We have our fair share of stuck up people, but the majority of the people you meet here will be the most driven students in the nation who will go on to be tremendously influential both nationally and internationally. It is true, Penn is the perfect balance of work and play. My roommate and I talk all the time about how we could never imagine a better college experience elsewhere. To be honest, there is a slight atmosphere of cutthroat competition but that doesn’t mean we love to socialize and have fun. It’s a weird contrast.

IMO, academic comparison between the Ivies is like comparing the Batmobile, Ironman suit and Gundam for the purpose of taking you to your girlfriend’s house. The Ivies are all good enough to get you anywhere you want, it’s only up to your maneuverability :p

Sometimes people prefer the Batmobile, or the Ironman suit or (for Asians) the Gundam. At least, we never heard Batman complaining “*****, I want a Gundam.” Come on guys, Ivy guys are all superheroes in a DC Universe! We are supposed to fight villains not fellow heroes :))

Actually, among those in the know, Penn is also known for strong liberal arts/humanities. In fact, many of Penn’s liberal arts/humanities departments are ranked in the same range as–or even higher than–Columbia’s (e.g., English, History, Economics, Anthropology, Religion, Music, Linguistics, French, Spanish, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, etc.). Penn and Columbia are quite comparable in the liberal arts.

Be proud of your new school! :)

dancingdoctor

What counts the most is your own opinion. Penn definitely is the best Ivy school, so while others are debating over the standings of their schools, you may focus on what Penn can offer you and how you can get the most out of it. Cheers!

I would also like to add thought that the main reason I would pick Columbia is because it’s in NYC, and I’m from New York etc., people from Philadelphia or near that area would probably have a similar bias. You can’t really compare Columbia and Penn though since they’re pretty different.

I consider NYC more of a negative for undergrad experiences than a plus (grad school of course is a different story). The nice thing about Philly and Penn is that Philly is big enough to have tons of things to do, but not so big and so alluring as to drown out the special centrality of campus life. You have your whole life to do the New York thing. College you only get to do once, and for only 4 years (or 5 if you play your cards right  )

Anyway yes, Penn is the bestest. Evarrr. :)

for arguments sake i live in between nyc and philly and when i think of going to school in nyc, it just doesn’t feel as good as when i think of going to school in philly. The vibe of philly is different having been to both cities

Dancingdoctor, I love your exuberance about your new school. There is much to celebrate about Penn and Philly, but you can do that without dissing other schools. There are few places less boring than NYC!

You were making two points: 1) Penn is the best Ivy, and 2) Penn is the best Ivy for you. You did a great job of making the second point. I’d stick with that. ;)

The Ivies are like luxury cars imo

Harvard- Maybach
Princeton- Rolls Royce
Yale- Saleen
Columbia- Ferrari
Penn- Lamborghini
Dartmouth- Mercedes S Class
Brown- BMW 750 Li
Cornell- Lexus

All these cars are great and nice, you would be lucky to have any them and obviously can’t go wrong with any of the cars, except maybe the Lexus lol

wow… this thread is silly.

^ And it was silly of you to bump this thread.

^oh SNAP!!! :D

the new generation lamborghinis are amazing
