Could use some advice

Hello folks! Guess this situation has been bothering me for a while and I could use some advice or opinions.

Right now I have a 2.9gpa. Yeah that is right, a 2.9gpa. Hopefully your computer didn't explode.

I honestly don't know where I stand. When I first started CC, I just didn't know what I wanted to do. Figured I try my shot at nursing but that didn't turn out the way I wanted it to all because of me. After feeling discouraged I decided to go back to CC and change my major to history. It is something I enjoy and I spent the last year working harder to bring up my gpa and working to become a better student.

Before I transfer to UC I will have all my pre reqs finished. I've finished the Asian and American history series already all with B's or higher. Taking Western history for the next quarters and I assume it will go well. I also completed all my English and literature requirements with all A's.

My IGETC is finished.

I worked at 2 museums and work at this after school arts program (for the past 2 years). I really don't know if that it is "good enough" but, um yeah I guess it is something. Not even sure if they even care for ec's.

I couldn't TAG because I took one semester at CSU years ago. They said TAG was only for CC students with all CC coursework. I'm still a CC transfer student with enough credits for transfer.

So I would like to know your opinions. What are my chances? I am obviously not trying for UCB or UCLA. I would really be happy with UCD, UCI or UCSB but I feel that my gpa is way too low. Should I stay another year at CC? I know I've changed and I am working harder but I still have those low grades on my records from nursing and a low gpa which makes me feel discouraged at times.

From what I've been reading, gpa is one of the biggest factors in most schools so I just don't know where I stand. I haven't really read any low gpa stories on this forum so I don't know how it works for people like me.

Thanks.

wait what? I did one quarter at a UC and i still TAGed as a ccc student. My TAG even got accepted by Davis, and got seemingly positive responses from everywhere else! Who told you that??!

You should have just did a TAG anyways, you should have just went to the site and read the requirements regardless of what anyone told you. If your G.P.A was a 3.0 prior to fall semester you would of had a chance at TAG even though you did a Semester at UC. As long as a majority of your grades are from a CC you qualify for a TAG.

When it comes to things like this you never go by what people say, because every case is different. You always have to read the fine print.

Good Luck!

You should probably look into that TAG thing, also it never hurts to try, so just go for it. I’m not going to “chance” you (I don’t believe in students being able to “chance” other students). Keep in mind that the bare minimum to apply for UCs as a transfers is 2.4 (correct if I’m wrong, I haven’t checked in over a year), so a 2.9 is well above the minimum. Just keep your hopes yo and try, if it doesn’t pan out the way you want it to this year, try again next year. If it does come to having to take an extra, maybe take some “filler” courses to help boost that gpa of yours. Goodluck!

P.S. of the three you’re going for I really hope you settle on UCSB, when I went down there, I didn’t want to leave at all…honestly the only reason we left is cuz my friend made me =(

The minimum GPA for UCD TAG is a 2.80 so you should be fine.

The counselors (from the UC) and the website gave me this information. Well too late lol now but I did one semester at a CSU, not a UC. They told me that if you had coursework at CC or UC (and was in good standing) then you are eligible for tag. My GPA was not 3.0 prior to fall quarter. I have a 2.9 as of right now. Even with my fall quarter grades, 3As and 1B, it is 2.9 as of right now.

I met up with a UCR counselor. She said I wasn’t eligible for TAG and on the website it states, “All your course work must be completed at a California community college. Although UC Riverside accepts course work from other colleges and universities, we write TAG contracts for students with course work taken exclusively at California community colleges.”

UCI website states, “has any coursework from a four-year college/university (exception: coursework completed at a UC in good standing);” is under “WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TAG?”.

There is also my GPA. I believe I could have applied for Davis and maybe 2 others. Perhaps if I stay at CC 1 more year, I will just go for it.

Thanks for reading.

The UCs treat prior enrollment at a CSU differently than they do prior enrollment at any other four year colleges or universities. The UCs have a policy of accepting few, if any, transfers from CSUs directly and do not want CSU students getting around this policy by spending time at a CCC after leaving a CSU so they can then transfer to a UC.

High school graduates have to be aware that from the viewpoint of the UCs, once you enroll at a CSU you have made a fundamental and largely irrevocable choice on the type of college education you will eligible for. The student who goes directly to a UC or a CCC with the intention of transferring to a UC has chosen a path to graduate from a research institution with the intention of preparing the student for graduate or professional school or a managerial level position in industry after receiving a bachelors degree from a UC. The CSU student has chosen to attend a teaching institution meant to prepare students only for entry level positions in the work force upon graduation.

Awe you should have read the TAG requirements for each UC campus. Sometimes counselors really don’t know that much. I went to Sonoma State last year and just finished up my first semester at a CC, but I still got an approved TAG for UC Davis. I was able to TAG to UCSD as well, even though their response was ambiguous since they haven’t fully adopted the program like the other UCs. The only campus I know of that you cannot TAG with if you’ve previously enrolled at a 4 year institution, such as a CSU, is UCI. It specifically states that in their requirements.

It’s as simple as searching the UC campus you want to TAG with and their requirements in google, and it should pop up within the first page. Just remember, it’s important to do your research and be proactive with EVERYTHING… never trust a counselor completely! You can stay another year at a CC, bring that GPA up to a solid 3.0+ and obtain a TAG in the fall (applications for TAG start September 1st I believe). You need at least a 3.0 to TAG. Best of luck!
