Could you give me your input?

Okay, so I know you aren't admissions people...blah, blah, but I still would love to hear ppl's input. I need a reality check and I know I do.

Here's the facts: I want to go to Cornell (hence I am here). I really, really like the school, the location, the size: everything. It's my dream college, especially for my intended major. Now, before I get to my stats: I'll tell you some stuff:

Intended Major: Natural Resources/Science of Environmental Systems (I can't decide)
I go to a liberal arts high school in a yucky area. Most people don't go to top schools even if they get in because of financial issues.
It's public. Oh, and I want to apply ED

Stats:
I'll give you the worst-case, but still extremely plausible scenarios:
GPA: 3.8 (only B's in Freshman Year)
Rank: 10 out of 53
SATs: 680 CR, 680 M, 760 W (just my luck that Cornell doesn't use writing, I guess) I'm retaking in June
Subject Tests: 770 Math, I need to take physics in October for CALS

No APs at my school: but I am taking Stats, and 2 econs soon so wish me luck!!!

ECs:
Environment stuff. I have lots and lots of stuff: awards, hours, impact. Literally. I've been really into my organization forever so I'm extremely committed. I absolutely love it.

Speech and Debate: State Champion 2x, lots of hours spent, debate and speech: extemp, lincoln douglas, and oratory

Fine arts stuff: I'm the lead in a play, I sing a lot

I would love to hear your comments! Thanks so much! =)

i would say probably on the border…but for CALS i think you probably have a sizable chance :)…maybe take more than two SAT II’s? i also have never heard of cornell discounting hte writing section…

I dont know maybe its just my school (extremely competitive) but most people won’t even get a second look at an ivy without a 2250, so you might want to try the SAT I/ACT again.

Also, I would recommend more than 2 SAT II’s.

Other than that, just try and tie up your application with the nature theme and make sure you really stress your experience and passion in the Cornell essay on why you want to be in CALS.

Good luck =]

are you an URM?

to roneald, thats not true. i only had an 1870 or something, and several ppl i met when i just went wer earound the same area (< 2000). but i was at diversity hosting weekend and we were all URM’s so…

i think cornell will go for fit over your stats. at least, thats why i believe i and the aforementioned admitted kids i met got in. i had horrible things going for me, lol.

i think you have a good chance especialy since all your extracurriculars are so oriented on your environmental stuff

haha no…I’m not a URM- my parents are from the Indian Subcontinent
I am from rural arizona though!
And the Cornell school profile does not seem like they need a 2250

Here are the 50 percentile ranges:
SAT Critical Reading: 630 - 730
SAT Math: 670 - 770

Haha well I guess my school is just super competitive then.

does your school or has your school sent students to Cornell or other top schools?

your rank is a bit low but your school doesnt have that many students to begin with…

I think you have a pretty good chance, your EC’s really tie with your intended major, which is great. the SATs could use a boost, but if you dont, I think it should be fine too

make sure you really work hard on your app tying in your passions for that major

yeah, we get students accepted to places, but most stay in state for financial reasons–our local schools are dead-cheap
some go on to top schools though: yale, 4 to chicago, and duke as of the past 2 years

yeah, my rank is pretty low–b/c of my incompetence in freshman year…but I got straight A’s after that
integrating passion into my essays next year will be fun! how do you do that without sounding cheesy?

Also, what should be the minimum score I get on my physics SAT for cals?–they say I need a science and I only know physics (I’ve had 2 years of it)
Are they really going to care about my physics SAT score?

advice, my friends?

please??? almost 350 views and what…seven replies? I would love advice

ummmmm…if you help me I’ll give you a cookie???

not sure what you want, a few of us already gave our input…

Well, more ppl would always be nice too, but I was actually looking for an answer to the SAT subject test question I had in a previous post.

i don’t think theres a minimum for an sat 2

i’ve seen people get in with stuff like 650 on subject tests so…

When you apply to Cornell, make sure that your essay emphasizes why you want to go to Cornell. This year’s prompt was something about what are your goals and how can Cornell help you get there. Do your homework about what makes Cornell different. Play the game. You will have an advantage being from the west. Here in the east so many kids apply that admission is difficult. Oh, the advice the tour guide gave the young woman from Florida who was on our tour was to buy some boots.
