Could you guys rank the BIG TEN

of all the 11 colleges that are part of BIG TEN which one would be the best (academically)
could you guys rank them from 1 to 11.

THE BIG TEN
University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, and University of Wisconsin.

Overall, for undergrad?
They each have particular strengths re: grad progs.

Northwestern (admittedly, I went to this school.)

Michigan

Wisconsin (this and the following two are very close)

Illinois

Penn State

Indiana (this and the rest are very close as well)

Iowa

Minnesota

Ohio State

Purdue

Michigan State

Ranking them is inexact and probably of no real benefit to an excellent student because they are all very good. sure U of Michigan is likely at the top, but Wisconsin-Madison, Minnesota-Twin Cities, Indiana and of course Northwestern are not far behind at all regarding the undergraduate experience. And Michigan State is excellent, particularly in the life sciences.

I don't think that there are many "excellent students" who would pick Michigan over Northwestern, academically, LakeWashington--unless for discounted tuition.

Michigan & Northwestern

Wisconsin
Illinois
Penn State

Indiana
Iowa
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue
Michigan State

so i guess they are in 3 groups
[edited]

Then I would have to disagree with you because more than a few folks do pick U of Michigan over Northwestern. They are peer institutions. Personally, I like Northwestern for its location.

for undergrad, really?

Northwestern
UMichigan
UWisconsin
UIllinois
Penn State
UMinnesota
Purdue
IndianaU
UIowa
Ohio State
Michigan State

I hope that you folks continue to underestimate MSU when the time comes for my kid to apply in a couple of years. LOL. MSU is increasing its recruiting efforts here in the northeast, but I hope the competion here doesn't find out what great programs MSU has and how fun the college experience can be in East Lansing.

Northwestern
UMichigan

UWisconsin
UIllinois
Penn State
Indiana
UMinnesota

Purdue
UIowa
Ohio State
Michigan State

EDIT: LW, MSU is a fine school (I thought about applying). But this is a pretty damn good academic conference. MSU is pretty equal to Purdue, UI, OSU. Its not a bad school at all.

Overall Academics

Michigan

NW/Wisconsin/UIUC

Penn Stae/Purdue

Indiana/MSU/IOwa/OSU/Minnesota

actually i would go w/ this:

Michigan & Northwestern

Wisconsin
Illinois
Penn State

Indiana
Iowa
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue
Michigan State

Anyone, Rabban, who ranks Northwestern with UIUC and Madison in overall academics, has very little conception of these schools, I imagine... of the types of students who attend each.

I would put Indiana and UMinnesota along with the likes of Penn State and Purdue.

USNews says this for engineering in undergrad

Illinois

Michigan

Purdue

Wisconsin

Northwestern

Penn State

Minnesota

Ohio State

Michigan State

Iowa

Indiana

What are you trying say? Are you saying students attending Madison or UIUC are inferior than NW students? I dont know about you. But i heard plenty of excellent students attending Madison/UIUC.

besides according to post #15, Madison/UIUC>NW....

and

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/eng/brief/engrank_brief.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/eng/brief/engrank_brief.php</a></p>

Madison/UIUC>NW....

<a href="http://live.psu.edu/index.php?sec=vs&story=1****&pf=1%5B/url%5D">http://live.psu.edu/index.php?sec=vs&story=1****&pf=1</a></p>

"Anyone, Rabban, who ranks Northwestern with UIUC and Madison in overall academics, has very little conception of these schools, I imagine... of the types of students who attend each."

Yup, future CEO's go to Wisconsin, future engineering wonders go to Illinois, future pretentious snobs go to Northwestern.

That's just for engineering, Rabban... Perhaps that's all you're interested in, but I thought that this thread took into account undgrad education more generally.

And yes, I'm stating explicitly that, in general, there's a more intellectual atmosphere at NU, (at least among undergrads,) than at either of those two schools. Furthermore--having lived in that region for a large chunk of time and having known many people who went to all three schools--I doubt that many people from either Madison or UIUC would even argue this... I'm not sure that this translates into a higher quality undergrad eduxation in general, but I suspect that it has some effect.

Compare acceptance rates, SAT scores, graduate prog rankings, various undergrad rankings, talk to students if you find time, etc. for the three schools.

wow, barrons...
