further info: moved a lot, could be cause of my weak freshmen year and lack of hours for community service. because of transferring to a lot of schools, clubs are not consistent on a 3-4 year term

Majors i'm thinking about:
Chemical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering

Also some colleges i'm thinking:
Tulane University
Purdue University
U of M- twin cities
NDSU

You sound very close to a match for all of those schools, your SAT is very good and you have taken a rigorous course load. For Purdue applying to the engineering school will decrease your chances, but still a solid shot. Tulane would be your next hardest. U of M- twin cities and NDSU are safeties. Some other schools you should check are: Case western Reserve (very good BME) and look at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, good engineering school and you have a solid shot, their SAT Range (middle 50%) (CR,MA,WR) is 1780-2090.

You’re from North Dakota?

Use that to your advantage, and try Bucknell, Lafayette, and Union, all of which are LAC’s with stellar engineering and students from your state. I would also try for Swarthmore and Washington and Lee, as well.

Smaler tech institutes may also be a good place for you to look, like Rose-Hulman, Kettering U, or Stevens. Mnay places will want you just due to your residency, so think small (in enrollment, at least) and shoot for places that will want your “diversity”.

Good Luck!!!

Swarthmore is pretty hard to get into though. I probably can’t apply EA either because I will take the subject tests in November. thanks for the replies though

Wow, I keep waiting for a high stats kid from ND to show up here–many schools would be happy to find one. But alas, your rank will make many colleges hard.

Is money an issue?

no, money isn’t an issue or at least not a major issue.

The “Public Ivies” are all excellent for science and engineering:

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (very well-renowned)
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
University of Wisconsin, Madison
University of Texas, Austin
University of Colorado, Boulder

Your geographic diversity can open a lot of very good Eastern doors, such as Carnegie Mellon, Lehigh, etc

bump 10 char

If you are interested in engineering, you may want to look at liberal arts colleges that offer a 3/2 program with a university with an engineering school. Being from North Dakota is a huge asset especially with the smaller schools looking for geographic diversity.

Do you think I have a shot at Rice University?

“Do you think I have a shot at Rice University?”

Reading the rest of the thread, I was thinking to myself that you should consider Rice. Just be sure that you’d be interested in living in an area with an entirely different climate from ND. In terms of your admission likelihood, I’d say it’s a match. Good luck!
