Prompt: Is the world changing for the better?

The world has constantly been changing. humans have created many improvements scientifically and politically. It is imperative for humans to adapt to the inevitably changing world. Technological improvements have devastated nature and the potential to inflict destruction has increased exponentially. Social media and the Internet have provided a means for predators to abduct, bully, and harass others. Our world has been imprinted by technology for the worse and our ability to wreak havoc will lead to our impending demise.

The attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki devoted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. On the day that the atomic bombs were released between sixty-thousand and ninety-thousand people died. The scientists who synthesized the atomic bomb even held a petition to be notified when the bomb would be utilized so they could mentally prepare for the devastation that would be caused by their work As of today, countries alone have the power to eradicate life on Earth. One mistake can lead to the extinction of human life; we live in the fear of the impending nuclear war between the superpowers of the world.

Facebook, twitter, and other types of social media have created a gateway for predators to harm others. Children have been abducted, raped, and murdered because of their foolish choices to listen to strangers online. The Internet allows people to cyberbully others; Amanda Todd, a young teenager, was found dead because she hung herself. Depressed and lonely, Amanda was a victim of cyberbully; her friends had posted nude photos of her online and ostracized her from their clique. Technology has created different ways for people to inflict emotional and physical harm to others.

Fossil fuels transformed transportation, accessibility, and manufacturing. Coal and gasoline are primary sources of fossil fuels that are burned everyday by automobiles and factories to create a source of energy for transportation and manufacturing. Fossil fuels are also harmful to the environment as they release carbon when burned. A recent experiment in China was conducted by the government. Within a span of two weeks the government enforced a law that alternated the days between which a car could be driven. This law tested the difference between have each car driven daily and having a lower amount of cars driven per day. China’s smog cleared up within three days and the magnitude of particles per cubic inch of air decreased dramatically. Since this was only an experiment, the government removed the restriction. The change in air quality was instantly noticeable; their skies of blue had regressed into skies of ashy grey. The pollution created by technology has created an everlasting imprint upon the world.

The ability to improve and evolve allows for a better lifestyle for many. Advancements and innovations have improved accessibility to the necessities in life. Technology has created a mark upon the world that cannot be removed. The world has been changing, but the burdens of impending chaos have changed it for the worse.
