Hello there.
So in high school I decided to take German as my foreign language. I'm also still taking band as I am going into my senior year. So taking these two classes presented a problem. In my junior year I could not take German 5/6 because both that class and Concert Band was during 3rd period. I chose band over german.
So I'm just wondering and want to get off my mind: is taking a 3rd year of a foreign language that important for applying to colleges? (I'm applying to all UC schools). Will it hurt that I only took two years?

Thanks!

Two years is the minimum, 3 is recommended. So your application will be weak in that area compared to other students, especially at the more selective UC’s. Aren’t you going to take it Sr. year?

When my son applied to school, the requirement I saw on all of his colleges was 2 years of a foreign language.

Often the requirement is two years, but three or four years (depends on the school) are usually recommended. Take German senior year if possible, having two years will hurt you…

The UC’s specifically say 2 is required, 3 is recommended. For Berkeley and UCLA, you’d want 4 to be competitive, but you might get in with 3.
