Counseling for trying to Transfer

Hi! I'm currently a freshman at UCLA and looking to transfer either up to UCB or out of the UC system altogether. I have NO CLUE where to start. We had very intense college counselors at my high school so I got a lot of guidance in applying, and I know there won't be anything similar for this but I was wondering if there are guidance or resources out there for students trying to get the hell out of their current school.

Thank you.

You can look up individual schools for their requirements online. For example, UCB writes:

“Students who wish to transfer to Berkeley from another UC campus are considered in light of their personal circumstances and the availability of space in their prospective major; these students must apply as junior transfers with a minimum of 60–80 semester units (not to exceed 90–120 quarter units). These units must be completed by the end of the spring prior to fall matriculation.”

So you’ll have to stay approximately two years at UCLA.

If you’re transferring out of UCs you’ll be just a regular transfer student from a 4yr university to another 4yr. There’s definitely resources out there on the internet. What type of schools (besides UCB) are you looking at? What about UCLA do you not like?

I read Berkeley’s transfer page… looks like I’m not shooting for them. I’d like to be a sophomore level transfer.

I’m looking for something smaller, weirder, though still having a reasonably strong CS program. I’m not really into the campus culture, and I’m not a huge fan of the city of Los Angeles. Thus far, I’ve looked around at Columbia, UNC, and U of M. Still some big state schools on there, but not as much of a culture shock (I’m from the Midwest). Peripherally interested in the University of Chicago (though their CS program is a little weaker). I’m not really sure what else I should be looking at/for. Any recommendations would be really helpful, I want to put myself in a good place to apply.

A different question-- I’m currently transferring into the CS program at UCLA (my major entering was biology), would it be better/clearer to change my major to undecided for the purposes of applying? I’m taking computer science and computer science-related classes, but my current transcript (which doesn’t have grades yet) would still say “Biology” at the top.

SUNY-ESF (Environmental Science & Forestry) located in Syracuse. One of tops in country for Environmental Science. Syracuse University right there too. Excellent J-school. Not sure if you can take courses across the 2 campuses or not - you might look into it.
