I am THINKING about attending a CC. I plan to major in Biology and the counselor at the CC told me something that really ****ed me off.

She told me that since my major was very tough that it would take me a long time to transfer. That I would be at a CC for 3 years and possibly MORE.

That was a first for me, I've never heard of anyone spending more than 2 years at a CC who wanted to transfer.

Can anyone confirm this? There is NO WAY I am spending more than 2 years of my life at a CC. FORGET IT. I'm already missing out on tons of college life by going to a CC so I refuse to do that. If that's the case, I'll either go to a college I didn't want to go to or find a different major.

Do you have any college units already? Any AP classes you took in high school or summer college courses?

You can see for yourself how much time it would take you to finish the major pre-reqs by going to Assist.org and selecting the CC and the prospective UC and making an academic plan.

With a good plan and if you're willing to work hard and fast, you should transfer out after 2 years, so I recommend you see a CCC transfer counselor to sketch how the classes would be distributed

I know some kids who are bio majors who did really well in high school and got into great schools but went the CC route because they knew they were gonna take a long time to graduate and wanted to save all the money they could by going to a CC. They are planning on 3+ years, but I know it can be done in 2 if you want to. You might have to take summer sessions and winter intersessions and take a lot of classes but it can be done.

my god this is terrible, i really didn't want to go to CC for that long but it seems inevitable....

Does anyone know what path I can take to finish as quickly as possible? I don't have any AP classes that would be help me out in this situation. If I took classes during summer and winter do you think I could transfer as a Bio major in 2 years? I would prefer to transfer to UCLA/UCSD/UCI.

its true, a lot of bio majors at my cc take 3-4 years to complete their requirements. its tough. Also, business majors usually take 3 years with accounting and other requirements they must complete. Its really not that bad, i mean, you gotta do what you gotta do. Time flies anyways.

even if you were to take classes during the winter and summer... you have to keep several things in mind. 1) finishing your GE/IGETC. 2) A lot of those bio/chem courses are 4-5 units, so it makes it difficult to take a lot of classes for a regular person, and 3) bio classes are hard to begin with so overloading will probably damage your gpa depending on your skills

what about doing an easier major and then transfering? and then changing it. LOL i'm sorry if I sound like a loser but this whole CC thing came out of nowhere and I'm trying to avoid for reasons I don't know.

Little_Duck, bio has a ton of pre-reqs such as linear algebra, differential equations, Calc 1, 2, and 3, physics for scientists and engineers, chem, o-chem, etc. It is no joke.

Haha no way you don't sound like a loser, everyone is here to help. Try a major change to something like sociology or philosophy or anthro? Business econ? Plenty of majors. If you want to major in something that will just get you into the school with a lower GPA you should check out the UCLA decision thread. It's tough to change majors though, nearly impossible.

If you really don't want to spend more than two years at a CC, don't worry it can be done, but it will be hard work. Consider loading up to 18 units for a semester or two and doing as many courses as you can in the summer. Look on ASSIST for UCs that have more lenient prereqs for Biology (for instance, SD wants 3 semesters of physics, Davis wants only two). If you really want out in two, it can be done; for almost any major in my opinion. You could also leave out a prereq or two so you don't kill yourself; just keep up the GPA and admissions shouldn't be too bad.

Do the IGETC, sign a TAG. Worst case scenario you have to stay 2 1/2 years at a CC, then you can apply for winter quarter (better than 3 full years, anyway).

I wouldn't recommend picking a different major and then changing to Bio after you transfer because you will have to finish those prereqs either way.

I agree that it can be done in two years and I know several people whom have done it. But you are looking at high unit semesters and winter and summer classes.

I'm a Bio major and yes that is true, it does take 3 years to transfer (no more than that if you stay on track). I applied with out 4 of my pre-req classes just to take a chance. If I don't get in I'll be staying a third year to finish o-chem and physics. But with 2 sems bio, 2 calc, 4 chem, and 2 physics AND your IGETC classes if you're in CA....you could see that it is quite difficult to fit that into 2 years. Good luck!

Haha. I started CC in 2000, and I'm just transferring this year. Of course, I started out while concurrently going to high school, and had a lot of obstacles in the intervening time, like illness and homelessness . . . :P

I am transferring this year after 7 years at CCC, part time while working full time. Could I have finished sooner? Oh yes. But, I changed my mind about my major a few times and went easy on myself by taking only 2 classes each semester until last year. Plus I had to take some pre-pre-req classes (uh, "remedial").

Regarding changing majors: I initially started out as a computer science major, but decided before even starting the first class that I wanted to do plant biology. But, I got discouraged when I couldn't get a certain math class at a decent hour in the evening (my job is inflexible and I must stay here until 5:30pm each day), so I changed again to Spanish Language and Literature. After that I didn't take any biology pre-reqs or chemistry, so now that I actually want to major in a science, I can't without spending another 3 years at CCC. Hence, I will be majoring in non-physical geography with a minor in Spanish. Take it from me, you CAN probably get out of CC within 2-3 years as a biology major, but you must plan well and try not to get sidetracked.

And as far as I can tell, it takes just about the same amount of time at a 4 year uni to get through Biology as it would to go to CC then transfer, so I don't really see what the problem of going to CC first is. Think of it this way:
-Save money
-Excel in your classes due to less incentive to party
-Due to saving money, take a class or two outside of your major to explore your interests
-And, you CAN join clubs or the school's student government and still get a bit of that "college life" feeling; or join one of the school's sports teams (my school has a top/winning football team in its division)

If I do indeed take 3 years to transfer to a UC (upper/mid) then how many years will I spend there? Do I still spend 2 years there? So then it's like a wasted year, because if I went there straight then wouldn't I be done in 4 years?
