there's rumor that school counselors actually find out admission decisions earlier than we do!?
Is this even possible??
anyone has ever heard about similar stories? even if not for Cornell??

Normally you find out first.

But there are always exceptions… I heard that at top private schools that send dozens of students to ivies every year counselors have more communication with the admin officers than do counselors at other schools.

The college counselor at my S’s private boarding school in VA told me that Cornell hasn’t shared any info with them for years. Actually, when he got in ED, she said she was surprised about that and thought he would be deferred. Not too professional on her part, as I thought she would have been happy and just gone with it…however, it does illustrate the fact that she had had no communication with them.

That being said, maybe a private boarding school in VA might not have the clout that some of the private schools in the NE might have.

Private school GCs generally do not have any communication with adcoms over ED. But for RD, some private school GCs will have conference calls with adcom to go over applicants prior to the decision date. During the conference call, GC will have a pretty good idea which applicant will get admitted, but not for certain.

^^^^ She said she never has communication with them. That being said, I think it’s because so few kids from my S’s school apply to Cornell. There’s just not a relationship there. I know that for RD, there are discussions between the school and colleges in our area. That’s probably because they get so many applicants from our school. My guess is that is how it goes - if a college is a favorite among a high school population, there’s a lot to talk about to differentiate between candidates. Sometimes, they just can’t take them all.

GCs at DS’s independent school sometimes know ahead of time, for some colleges. Not sure about Cornell. They seemed to know for DS1 (teachers were congratulating him before he had heard) but not for DS2. Also for other colleges they occasionally pass on the news to parents (esp. if it’s bad news) so they can be prepared to help their kids thru the disappointment. It’s not a regular occurrence, though.

i went to small private school, my college counselor knew before i did
