Counselor Help!!!!!!!

• INTERNATIONAL STUDENT* Hi, I have recently switched schools after having spent over 12 years at the first school and was wondering whether it is possible to attach the recommendation letter from my previous counselor on the common app instead because my new counselor barely knows me and I think she will write a brief and superficial letter that doesn’t adequately reveal all of my traits.

You can use your old counselor as an extra rec, if the college allows extra recs. However, you have to also use your current counselor. No way around it. The good news is that colleges recognize that some counselors do not know all their students well. Here is what MIT says:

Guidance Counselor Recommendation for Mike:
I do not really know Mike very well. He has come to me for routine matters but generally has not had any problems that he has discussed with me. In this large school, I do not always have the time to personally get to know each of my advisees. From the comments I get from Mike’s teachers, I have the impression that he is one of the strongest students this school has seen.

Critique: We do not learn very much from this report, but we understand why. The counselor is very honest, and we are not left guessing as to the reason there is not more information and will turn our attention to other parts of the application.
