Counselor Letter of Rec Problems... why are counselors so lazy???

So, I sent in my requests for a letter of recommendation to my counselor at the very beginning of the school year and I have my early decision date coming up. Today, I went and asked her about my recommendation and why it wasn’t written yet because she had promised me that she would get it done last week… but she didn’t. She then blamed me for him not getting the recommendation done and was very mad because I had come to ask him about it, which wasted her precious 5 minutes of time. I literally just wanted to check in that one time and she got so on edge about it and said that if I checked in again or if I told someone else to check-in of higher power (parents, etc) she would write me a bad letter of recommendation.
I never even mentioned bringing in anyone and have never in the past, so I thought that was weird… that was the first time I asked about it as well.

And then she feels the right to blame me and then basically blackmail me into keeping my mouth shut about her irresponsibility. I am nervous that she won’t get my application done in time because she already missed the deadline that he originally had for me and now he has like 30 letters he needs to write by the early date that includes mine. Also, I get the feeling she does not like me for some reason; I got a new counselor this year so I don’t even know her that well and vice versa so idk why she is like this.

Has anyone experienced this before? What do I do if she doesn’t get it in on time?

This is a stressful time for seniors. Take a deep breath.
If your school is a large public, then the counselors typically have 100 students and impossible to get to know personally.
Colleges know this and take into account.
Also, Nov 1st is your deadline to turn in the application, and typically the Recs can be sent a little late.

So, take a deep breath and do what is in your control i.e. submit your app on time.
Did your counselor have an interview/chat or request a brag sheet/resume prior to this appointment ?

@NCKris Yes, I already submitted my early application. I also turned in my information sheet the first week of school as well as had an interview already. The thing I’m a kinda worried about is that she is a new counselor this year and might not be as well-versed in the college application system as the veteran counselors.
If the recommendation is a bit late, would it negatively impact my application?

Hang in there. We have experienced weak guidance counselors and it’s so frustrating. Currently we have one who is older and hasn’t kept up with the changes and current day trends.

Let’s hope your “why are counselors so lazy” attitude didn’t seep into your conversation with your counselor.

I’m assuming your ED deadline is 1 Nov, and I think most schools allow another 2 weeks after that for all the supporting documentation to get submitted, so you should be fine.

It does seem like a strange conversation you had, but the way you phrased your question above may have seemed rude to her as well. I’d just let it go for now, and check again closer to the deadline. Just because you handed the docs in first week of school - does not mean it needed to be the first thing she did at a new school, probably better for her to check she will do it right, and it’s no difference to the college when it’s submitted as long as before their deadline for documents. Just giving you another side…

I don’t think it’s lazy, I think she’s probably really busy and overwhelmed. But, I understand your frustration and concern.

At this point I would just “play nice” with her. You do need her letter and more of her help along the way throughout this process.
