So recently I heard that we have to get a letter from the counselor on a college application. I was also told that it was "important". Well I go to a rather big school, the counselor for my section has not at all interacted with us except in the beginning of my Freshman year and all she did was introduce herself and that was pretty much it. So my question is how is it possible for someone who doesn't know you at all to write a letter of recommendation that is considered important. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Does anyone know why?

My personal take on it was this. Teachers would write about how you were in the classroom and what sort of student you were. The counselor rec was an opportunity for someone to expand on you outside the classroom.

It wouldn’t make sense for a teacher to waste space talking about your community service while it wouldn’t make sense for a counselor to talk about how you participated in class, for example.
