counselor won't send transcript!

My counselor is “too busy” to send my transcript to a college. It’s for a scholarship program and the deadline is in one week, she’s had all my materials for four. She said it would take her at least a few more weeks. I would at least like to make the deadline, because now it’s too late to just get it in as soon as possible (it’s a rolling deadline…). I am so frustrated, this can’t take more than a couple minutes. All I need is for her to sign off for my GPA and class rank, I am more than willing to lick the envelope and mail it myself. I am so frustrated, I have no idea what to do. Nobody in the counseling office is helping me. What annoys me even more, is at my school you have to pay your counselors to do this. When I complained to a lady in charge, she “reminded me” (as in, told me for the first time), this process usually takes at least 4 weeks. Is there anything I can do?? This isn’t four years of her life on the line, here.

Talk to the principal, and bring proof about when the transcript is due, and when you asked the counselor to send it. Preferably do this with your parents in tow. This will help the principal take you seriously. If the principal doesn't respond, time to call the school superintendent or school board.

You also can contact the scholarship program now, let them know what's going on, and send them an unofficial transcript. They may be willing to use that transcript until your official one arrives.

Sounds like my counselor. I had to apply by Nov. 1 and, come deadline, she still hadn't sent it out and, to top it all off, was taking the day off. I had my dad call the principal, only to find out that the principal was "busy" and could not help. So, at this point our blood is boiling (since she had had plenty of time to get this taken care of) and I looked up the number of the superintedent for my region. My dad called him, he called the principal, the principal called my counselor AT HOME and made her meet me somewhere to give me the forms. Yes, it was a big hassle but it all worked out in the end.

I agree with Northstarmom; keep going to higher levels of authority until someone does something to get it done. You (and, unfortunately, it often takes your parents) have to be aggressive when it comes to lax counselors.

Wow I am so glad I went to a small school! I gave my councellor 12 recommendations to do, and she did them all within two weeks, no problem. Then again, my graduating class had only 6 people!!

Yes, your parents will have to get involved. I know that the majority of people on CC are intelligent, competent, and capable young adults that don't need their parent's help. Unfortunately, you will not be able to get your foot in the door without a little power. To them, you are just a kid who can't do anything. Your parents can threaten a phone-call to the superintendant, and voila, your counselor is as sweet as sugar. I am so glad I sent my stuff out last month. I can't handle my retarded counselors. I basically was like,"look, you fill this out now. The sooner you are done, you are done with me. I need these transcripts, these forms filled out, and I'll take everything from there." I didn't trust my counselors to send everything out together and not lose forms, recs, etc. So, I demanded that they do the necessary counselor work, and I will put everything together to mail out. It worked out fine. Also, don't be rude. Just stand firm. Say that you talked with the state superintendant of schools office, and know that you are entitled to a college app. under a certain deadline. Just get higher authority involved.

Btw, my hs makes us pay $3 for each transcript. Your hs sounds a lot like mine. Do you live in GA

my high schoolis not like that at all. Plus it helps having a mom on the board of ed!

get your parents involved. They don't have to shout and threaten, just make it clear that the transcripts will get sent out or they will start making calls until they do send them. Have them start with the counselor, then the principal, then the superintendent of schools.

Also, after I was done, I asked for a couple extra sealed transcripts that I could have. That way, I have plenty of transcripts if I need one again.

Ok, I also realized that the application actually has to be at the school by the 15th, not postmarked, so it really needs to be done by Thursday. We'll see how it goes...

My plan is that if she screws up this deadline, it's not THAT big of a deal because the college is only a 20 minute drive, but i'm going to threaten that if she doesn't do my other school within three weeks I'm going to call the principle or the superintendent. Or both.
I guess I don't really need to worry about not getting my stuff in so early for this rolling deadline - they waived the application fee and filled part of it out for me, so I guess they really want me.

Thanks for everyone's help.

And Hoo, we pay $2.

Here they do 3 free and then after that you have to pay $5 each.

It also takes them up to 3 weeks to send them.

Same here, I think we go to the same school in Evanston, GuitarShredder05. Yeah at my school the couselors don't take long to send them to the register's but that is where it gets backed up. I suggest calling ur college and explaining how what is going on. I called Tulane yesterday and they said if I submitted my app by Nov. 1st, it was considered for EA. Colleges usually let u slide with transcripts because that's out of your control.

I'm going to threaten that if she doesn't do my other school within three weeks I'm going to call the principle or the superintendent.

I really would not recommend threatening anyone especially since you are on the down side of the power dynamic as this person still has to write a recommendation for you and could easily write that you are not good at problem solving or you don't work well collaboratively with others.

Give her a gentle reminder that you know she is busy, but you really need to get this form in by ___ date. Ask her if there is anything that you can do to help. Aboce all, maintain your cool and don't get confrontational with people. If you aren't getting the help you need, then escalate it to your parents and let them take up your cause.

Counselors write reccomendations for you, don't they?

You don't want to **** them off.

no, I didn't ask my counselor to write me a letter of recommendation. I had never even met her until the third week passed and I thought she should've gotten it done by then. I hear they can write you one anyway but I have no idea what you'd say about someone you've never met.

You're right, I guess I shouldn't threaten her...but we're getting into the 4th week now, this is ridiculous.

They have a counselor's reccomender form where at the very least they discuss how hard your classes were, etc. i believe.

Check your applications, you fill surely find the page for the counselor recommendation. This goes in in addition to the teacher recommendations.

Your counselor still holds the power in this situation, because s/he writes the recommendation that goes to the college with your the school profile, your Rank, GPA. You conselor is also the person that the shool looks to for addtional information about you and may have to be your adcocate with the admissions committees

See, I don't get this. TELL her that you need it done. TELL her that she has had enough time to do it, and that it is her job. And if she still says no, ask to see the Principal or someone higher up. Don't just take nonsense from these bureaucrats.

You guys need to pay for transcripts?

sybbie - recommendations are not required for any of the schools I'm applying to, they are optional. There are no forms for her to fill out except to sign off for my GPA and class rank.

And aim, you're right. That's what I've been trying to do, but it's a lot harder since she's been taking a "long weekend" for quite awhile.

uzis, uzis, uzis
