Counselor

Would you ever become a Counselor? Why or why not?

I hope to eventually become a Psychologist, but want to be a Counselor first as I plan on getting my Masters in Psychology from the start...

I'm also trying to figure out the salary and the job description, training, etc.

Look, I hate to be a jerk, but hardly a day goes by without you posting a question about your schedule, or a career path, or a random academic decision.

First of all, chill. Everybody goes to college thinking they’re going to do a certain thing, and most of them change their plans over the four years. You’re probably going to do the same. While having a general focus is great, the way you post makes me think that you’re eager to plan things out. This will limit what classes you can take, and makes it much more difficult to switch if your chosen path isn’t the right one.

Secondly, be more assertive. I know you’re nervous about college, and you should be, because it’s a very exciting and challenging place to be. But you can’t constantly look to a random message board for guidance, assurance, and micromanagement. Live your life!

That being said, I would not become a counselor because I am not interested in that profession or in being a counselor.

^ agreed. Please remember that we don’t know everything about you, and people get annoyed when you make new posts all the time about the same thing (esp. if you never contribute to posts other than your own). You need to look into finding someone to talk to in person. If you’ve been admitted to a college then you should go talk to them about this stuff.

With how often you’ve changed your mind about your career in the last few months, it wouldn’t be a great idea to set anything in stone. You are too worried too soon.

This place can give you help about your career choice: [Psychology Forums - Student Doctor Network Forums](<a href=“Psychology Communities | Student Doctor Network”>Psychology Communities | Student Doctor Network)

This place can tell you about the salary, job description, etc.: [Bureau of Labor Statistics Home Page](http://www.bls.gov)

And please start trying to do some research on your own before posting. Google helps a ton.

And no I would never consider that career because I’m not interested in it.

One thing I’d add is that you won’t be very successful in Psych if you don’t do your own research. Develop the skills now because when you’re asked to do an extensive literature review on the effects on X on Y in Z population is NOT the time to be learn them!

I have researched, but not as in depth as I have with all of my other majors…
