I’d like to ask for advice about my counselor’s letter of recommendation. I’d had some interaction with my counselor over the last three years, enough so that I think it would have been enough for him to write a decent letter of recommendation, but he resigned this year, and now I have a new counselor, with whom I’ve never interacted. I still need a counselor recommendation, however… what should I do?
I would sill ask for it, as many colleges now expect to see one. In reality, most counselors oversee 100s of students, and colleges understand that too. So such recommendations are likely stats/rank driven, speaking only to your college readiness in general or potentially comparing you to the rest of your class, and do not necessarily include a great deal of info about personal interactions, etc.
The Common Application provides an easy methodology for counselors to provide such online, making such a recommendation available to all participating colleges simultaneously.
Good luck…
You need to include the counselor recommendation when a college asks for one or your application wil be incomplete. Colleges will understand if the letter is not terribly personal and the counselor can mention in the LOR that he/she is new to the school. If you are a senior, I would request a meeting with the new counselor ASAP. Go over the schools you plan to apply to (including the deadlines) and ask what you can give him/her to help write your recommendation (you can offer a resume if you have one prepared or write up a list of your major activities and interests etc.).
I echo the excellent suggestion from @happy1
