Oh My!Scary!

Thanks for compiling this data.

Is this only for trumpet or for all music majors?

…everything in BassDad’s Master List of Acceptances thread.

There’s one competitive instrument where certain key acceptances - at the very highest levels/studios, with very limited openings each year, are not being listed on this forum…flute. I’m sure many people will be very interested to learn who obtained these slots. As far as I can tell a lot of people are opting to remain anonymous and not participate here or else they are not on CC at all. But - one should be aware there are more acceptances out there that are not on CC at all.

I would be surprised if anyone thought this was in any way a comprehensive or even representative list of who was accepted as music majors. It is obvious that this is a nonrepresentative sample/cross-section of acceptances. But I think most of the people who read and post on these threads find the lists to be interesting and informative. Many people are happy to hear of successes here, some are also happy to learn about programs they may had not known about, etc.

I know that many students these days prefer to post on Facebook than a site like this, and there must be many international students coming to the U.S. to study music who are not posting here for whatever reason. Some people are really concerned about privacy/anonymity and would not want to provide information (such as acceptances) that could possibly identify the student. Among parents I personally know who had students applying to top music schools, midlevel schools and lesser known schools, some of them had never heard of College Confidential or did not have the time or inclination to check it out.

It is obvious from looking at the lists that they could only be a small subset of all the students being accepted into music programs. But the fact that not every student and school is not on the list, or the fact that Curtis Institute for example, is not among the schools on the list so far this year, does not make the lists or this site any less valuable to the people who post or merely read the posts.

I agree with rigaudon. The value of the list is not that it is comprehensive, or even representative. Achieving either of those would be trying to bite off far more than violadad and I put together could chew. It can be useful for a number of other things, however, such as getting ideas for schools to research, finding contacts who can tell you about a specific school, judging when a school might release decisions from the date they started to arrive in prior years, finding someone else who may be headed to the same school that you are. One other important one is to celebrate the success of our young musicians on this forum.

We have had a number of flute players who were shooting for top programs in years past. This year, the woodwinds, brass and classical percussion seem to be less well represented, but there are a lot more singers and a lot more jazz instrumentalists. Next year it could be something completely different.

I approach the act of extrapolating some sort of truth from information like this as I do when reading a poll, which is also based on a sample-size that’s a small fraction of the entire population. Except this is less scientific than most polls, as its sample is derived from those who happen to stumble upon this site, and who choose to supply acceptance information. You study it with all that in mind … like when reading Wikipedia! Still, good stuff, I think. Where else do you get this much, this soon?

Yes, agreed, very helpful!

Sorry, I meant no criticism! I had the feeling that some readers did believe this was a comprehensive list (not meaning the OPs, who are highly experienced) - and since I can tell it is not in certain cases, I decided to mention that fact. There are some very plum spots/acceptances that are not listed here.

T’aint a Colburn, Curtis or Mannes acceptance on there.

And not enough to field a full orchestra with complete instrumentation without bringing in ringers. ;)

It is a microcosm, nothing more.

Trumpet Dad,
The Thornton School of Music at USC celebrated 125 years in 2009. I do not know if this will add any information to your post, but I read an unofficial source that indicated the freshmen class in the various disciplines will be around 110-120. The largest major is Music Industry. The source wrote there were over 400 applications for 40 places in that particular major.

Last year I read there were 10 places for piano. I have no idea how many auditioned.

That’s good information for getting a sense of our sample size here on CC.

I recently added my son to USC’s mailing list, though he [and other family members] are resistant to long-distance ideas [we’re on the east coast]. But we’re still 2 years from our final decision, so a lot could change between now and then.

Correction:

The number I was given unofficially is incorrect. The number should read 100-110.

TrumpetDad, if you have time I would love to see this kind of list for the “Master List of Final Decisions”. It would be interesting to compare.
We data junkies thrive on this stuff.

thank you!

Following up on Georgia Girl’s post-We heard that over 300 applied for the new pop music at Thornton. Only 25 were accepted. My d chose Thornton over Berklee and UCLA-very impressive place!

Thanks, TrumpetDad! Too bad more did not respond as far as final decisions, but the tally is still quite interesting.
