Countdown to Decision Day... 3, 2, 1...

That is ironic, given her username.

Just a question about commas here: are they always supposed to come in pairs? Because after watching the drama Shattered Glass, I am now calling into question my understanding of grammatical fundamentals.

Is anyone else here a The New Republic lover? (a subscriber (pilferer?) since the 8th grade)

It is strange that many perceive given people who post on a certain forum to be of their own gender. I admit that I assumed most of the posters were male for no particular reason. And An0maly, you’re quite right about engineering admits. But in general, gender is irrelevant for CC.

I took part in that discussion. The mindless status quo liberalism and intellectual rigidity was astounding. There were many misconstrued arguments on that thread – to the point where the simple assertion that college admission boosts must be more objectively inclusive of a greater variety of social factors was interpreted as unconcealed racism. Moreover, there were arguments that made me critically question the sanity and rationality of some individuals.

Haha, good point! I just remember her making a post about how she’s a “she” and not a “he,” and it has stayed in the back of my mind. Anonymous no more, I say.

By the way, good luck to everyone applying here. Hopefully we get in! I’m just hoping that Stanford and Harvard think the opposite each other, so my rejection at S will be good news:)

Look, if you want to get into it, weirder things have happened than people getting rejected from Stanford and into Harvard. I know of several people who were rejected from UPenn and got into Yale and Harvard. So I doubt what occurred with Stanford is in any way indicative of what will occur with Harvard. Also, keep in mind, college admissions, especially when you get into this caliber of school are somewhat of a crapshoot. 2400 SAT/4.0 GPA supposedly perfect applicants get rejected right and left all the time. No one knows what’s going to happen besides for the Harvard Admissions Committee, which has already decided our fates.

I question the sanity and rationality of anyone willing to devote the precious time God gives them every day to posting needlessly long-winded, senseless, myopic, and ultimately futile commentary on a topic that, given the more pressing problems in life, isn’t even that important anyway. There were some complete essays on that thread–didn’t those people have any homework, projects, or siblings to attend to? :)

I’ll remember to tread lightly, then. No need to wake a sleeping lion.

But the commas! Do they come in pairs or not?! It’s killing me here.

3 days, 18 hours, 29 minutes.

But looking at the time, I should log off to compensate for my lack of substantial academic productivity over spring break.

I have decided that AP’s be damned until after April 1st. Can’t bother studying until after that. And other schoolwork isn’t more important than the impending decisions.

^I agree. I’ll accept my failure as an AP Calc student with equanimity. The only homework worth doing is AP Spanish, since it only involves watching Pen

@ Gunther: I too have been reduced to uselessness by oncoming admissions decisions. I already don’t feel very pressured to do well on these, and with this added distraction, I end up passing most of my time in AP Spanish chatting with my friend (Waitlisted @ MIT) about admissions.

All the best to all of us, mates!

Well, I suppose I must provide one last response for the evening.

Although we were not in the proper forum to initiative any collective good, opinions can never be challenged or communicated without some form of civil disputation, even if it was in the trivial context of a public message board.

Yes, but I offered my true opinion and assessment of the issue.

It was winter break for many.

^ >.< You couldn’t just let it go, huh.

I have to admit that these forums are extremely entertaining and do help pass the what feels like enormous wait times better. And I am completely useless. I am just happy this week is my spring break so I don’t have to go into school dejected and depressed if all goes wrong.

^ My last day of school before a week long-plus Spring Break is Thursday, and Easter is this weekend! No school, plus 6+ hours of singing will keep my spirits up even if I get three denials. Well, at least, that’s the plan…

Definitely not. (So much for my claim to promptly log off :)) But in all sincerity, I have two papers to complete for tomorrow, so I better run along.

ksarmand,

Can you clarify your question about comma use?

It is possible to do that without a wall of pleonastic text. And I mean that for just about everyone on that whole goshdarned thread.

Bwahaha. And yet again, ksarmand has the last word. plants victory flag :D

@silverturtle: I just wanted to know if commas had to be used in pairs in sentences not bearing appositive phrases or anything like that. Because in the movie, the fact that commas were not in pairs turned out to be SUPER-SERIOUS BUSINESS.

I wouldn’t call it entirely trivial, as I am sure you were able to change some people’s views on the issue; there were, after all, over 24,000 views of that thread.

This thread and forum in general are really amazing. So happy I found something else to obsess over besides for the actual decisions themselves.
