I dressed up, and I politely asked (okay - practically begged) my dad to wear a suit and tie and my mom to wear a dress, blazer, tights, and heels. We may have been a little dressed up, but we looked professional and appropriate. It helps to go to the website of the school you’re visiting and read through it completely, so that you can get a good idea of what the school is about, its strengths/weaknesses, etc. and you can come up with some intelligent questions to ask. I read through my SSAT vocab flash cards on the way there, so I was able to throw in some “big words” too
Overall, just be yourself, and you will do great!

Lol during my interview I would say big words and after I said them I would think, “oh I hope that’s what that word means!!”

i am taking SSAT saturday! PLEASE WISH ME LUCK IM SO SCARED!!! i am applying to hotchkiss and my bro goes there so fingers crossed:)

What do they ask you in an interview?

Yeah what questions do they ask? Oh and how did everyone do on their ssat (oct)?

well, i got a 93, but i retook it this month, i should be getting my scores tommorow
so scared. At the interview’s the ask:

“What do you do in your spare time?”
“What would your friends, teachers, etc. say about you?”
“How do you describe yourself?”
“Books you are reading?”
“Tell us about your family…”
“Tell me about where you are from…”
“Favorite subjects…”
“Grades…”
“Why do you want to come here?”
“Why boarding school?”
“Other schools you’re applying to…”

It’s really unpredictable, but hopefully these help, have fun, and be yourself!

Wow, why did you retake the SSATs? A 93%ile is great! Well, I hope your score tomorrow will be better. Good luck! :)

thanks magusalex! what grade are you in btw?

So I was wondering if the notifications actually reach you on March 10, or just get sent out then. I will probably have to go on visits the following week (assuming I get accepted to any of the schools), as here we have a week of spring holidays then… but do the boarding schools have holidays then too?

Oh, and about the SSAT percentiles- when people talk about them here and when schools look at the percentiles, it’s the one scored by the grade, right? 'Cause I heard that a >85% is ideal for CHADES, and I don’t think I’d score in that range when compared to 11th graders. :(

well, i’m in 8th grade, thanks.

@CherryRose- I heard that andover’s acceptances come out exactly march 10 and arrive. Other schools I don’t know…

Each school is a little different. NMH jumped the gun last year by posting admit results at midnight EST on March 9 (i.e., just after the 8th). Many schools post online at midnight EST March 10, others at 6 a.m., others notify you via email at some point on March 10, and some only by snail mail (sounds like PA and DA time FedEx acceptances to arrive on the 10th). Loomis’ acceptance didn’t reach us until the 12th!!!

Hey! Are any of you going to the Andover meeting today in Princeton? Oh, and how were your SSAT scores?

^^Nope, I’d prefer to PM you the ssat scores, not post them, if you really want to know, PM me.

That was really helpful, PelicanDad- thanks. That must have taken a lot of time to cull.

It makes it all so much more interesting, doesn’t it… they time it all so that it’s one big bomb. No waiting- just boom.

Ok! Just wanted to report I got a 95 this time!!! If I add both scores together with highest scores of each section I get 96%ile, I’m so happy!!!

Good luck to every one else who takes the ssat, I hope you guys do great!

How much would getting 800s on one or more sections REALLY boost an application, or getting a 99 percentile? Did that happen to anyone?

Could somebody teach me how to adjust my SSAT scores to my grade level (I assume that’s the way everybody’s putting theirs)? And I’m just curious… has anybody here taken the SATs yet?

i have… i took them in 7th grade through Duke TIP program

I took the sats too. I got a 2000: 720 Writing, 660 Reading, 620 Math.
