Counting my chickens..before they hatch?

Hey there guys. I wanted to get some knowledgeable opinions about my plans. Here goes....

I am planning on moving to San Francisco because I am pretty much banking on the fact that I will be attending UC Berkeley next fall. Now I know what you are thinking, but first let me tell you my situation. I am in the UC Berkeley TAP program. Which gives me a little bit of an edge on other students. My rep is helping me draft and edit my personal statements, and will be evaluating my application before I submit it. In addition to that I have a 4.0 GPA. I am a Political Science major. I have a different story than most students. I have been an actor over the last several years. I started school at a CC straight out of high school and basically dropped out completely and just started attending again in February. So I will have completed all my coursework with in a year and some change. I am also currently tutoring several kids at a local homeless shelter. My TAP rep said that she feels very confident in my candidacy and that she feels that I am very competitive. So... with all of that... am I jumping to far ahead of myself? I just really want to get a start on my new life up north, I'm anxious.

PS… I’m planning on moving in March.

I’d say your in. I don’t think you’re ahead of yourself. With your credentials, you may even be behind! My advice is that you consider what you want to do once you get to Cal. Do you still want to continue tutoring or do you want to get involved in on-campus activities? Ask your rep if they’re any internships, scholarships, or that nature that you’d be in position for. Also, you seem like an ideal candidate for some scholarships at your CC. Try seeing if each department gives out a scholarship (even if you are financially stable, they are resume worthy). Ask yourself what you’d like to do after you get bachelor’s; law school? peace corps? working for an NGO? nothing? While you have the time now, get an idea of what you want to do once you’re here. I just transferred to Cal and realized that once you get here, it is up to YOU. You have to take the initiative and time flies! Good luck

Thanks so much for the encouragement! I actually have been thinking about some of the things you mentioned. I’m hoping to keep my 4.0 GPA after I transfer obviously. Then after I am pretty sure I want to go to law school. I’m also hoping to apply for the George A. Miller Scholars program but I know that it soooo competitive. So we’ll see… I spend a good amount of my spare moments looking into scholarships to apply to fund next year.Crossing fingers! Because I know I am gonna need it.

I’m a PoliSci major here too, but it’s my first year at a CC and I’m planning on going to Cal, and no where else lol. If I don’t get in I will stay at a CC until I do.

Good luck, I hope you get in and living in San Fran should be verrrry nice!

it’s like we’re living the same life – except your Cal is my UCLA. I live in the bay area now but I plan to make the move to LA in Jan/Feb (yes, before app decision). My primary reason for moving is actually to attend a cc down there that offers prereq course for my major. None of the cc’s up here offer it. And like yourself, I plan to apply to law school after completing undergrad. All I can say is…go for it! You are a very strong candidate and you should take this step with confidence. Have fun in Frisko…it’s an amazing city to live in.

Never think anything is too “competitive.” The fact is that a lot of students don’t apply for things because of that reasoning. Someone has to win, why not you? Don’t get discouraged either. Scholarships have a sort of domino effect, once you get one, more come your way.

Thanks guys… I’m feeling pretty good about this! I appreciate the encouragement! Good luck to all of you as well!
