country club reputation?

just wondering if this still holds true...i just visited saturday and didnt notice any elitism or snobby attitudes. in fact i rarely saw polos, etc. just t shirts and flip flops. i just keep hearing/reading people saying it is very preppy, while i did not notice it

Intriguing... My D is a freshman at Elon and has suggested there's a bit of a prep vibe she didn't fully expect (other than Elon she was thinking NC State - low preppyness). She choose Elon and is glad she did. I think the prep vibe exists but probably doesn't dominate. It may even be subtle enough to miss on a visit. I think Elon is generally a welcoming environment - and it likely is, or can be, more politically/socially diverse than it appears to some.

I'm not sure it's overly preppy as much as it is "really well off" for a lot of students. My S has been surprised at how many of his fellow students talk about their second (and third) houses, and their vacations at high-end locations, etc. Not in a bragging way, just as a matter of fact. That's more of the "country club" than "preppy" feeling. The preppyness vibe is there, but not as overwhelming as some guide books have made it out to be.

yeah ive read those guides and they intimidated me.....

xc - Don't be intimidated. There's plenty of space and variety at Elon to be certain you'll find comfortable friends. What my D has commented about is "most" people seem more preppy than she expected but that would likely have been the case at other private schools as well (she's from a very politically liberal family/community). I don't think she's having any issues finding interesting people to hang with.

i can't remember the last time i wore a polo on campus, but pledges for greek life, and many greek life members do have to dress up during the day. when going out, you should expect to see many people dressed up, though not all.

thanks for all the responses...i wasn't terribly worried about it as i didn't notice it during the open house...just wanted to clarify...i really liked the school.

quick question though as it seems you people either go there or have children going there...how strict/how closely do they follow the requirements for the honors college thing (fellows i think they called it?). my SATs are above for M&V requirements (i got a 1310), but with my writing which i didn't do as well as i wanted my total comes to 1890 which is below what they "estimated" the people in the program have. would i still be a candidate? also would it even be worth it? my tour guide said he was admitted into it but decided against it because of the freedom is lacks (have to take certain classes and such)

it's pretty competitive, but it's worth applying, especially since the essay for the honors is the same as the essay for the college fellows
