Couple of questions about UCB

hey guys! i've heard somewhere that the UC schools do not factor in your freshmen year when calculating your GPA. Did i misread / someone was wrong, or do they actually not count your freshmen year towards your cumulative GPA? If they don't, that would be the best thing that's happened to me since getting my car! Oh, and i'm out of state, and got a 2190 on the SAT. I'm retaking it, but what would be a decent GPA (UW, or UC) with my test score? thanks in advance!

It is true, UC’s do not look at freshman year. at all

They can still see your grades but they are not calculated into your gpa

they never see or ask for your grades during the application process, you send them your transcript after you get in. So freshmen grades have no effect at all. I think you can get straight F’s your freshmen year and they can’t do anything about it.

I had to enter my freshman grades during the application process

ALRIIIIIIIGHT! 8D
Not counting my freshmen GPA, my cummulative GPA is actually not as terrible as i thought. Thansk guys!

Also, does anyone know the formula for the “UC” GPA? Or at least, a site that calculates it for you? Does the UC GPA weigh AP and Honors classes? Because i’ve seen some “UC” GPAs that are over 4.0, but i wasn’t sure if it was because they counted A+s as 4.3s, or if they weighed course rigor. Sorry for bothering you guys, and thanks! (:

^ It’s course rigor, ie an A in an AP or “approved” honors class is worth a 5.0. There is a website but I’m too lazy to google it…for you.

short version -

UC GPA counts only courses from the categories a to g, basically academic courses. No gym, no religion, etc.

UC GPA counts only soph and junior year courses (plus summers associated with those years)

UC GPA puts all grads on a normalized 0-4 scale (A=4, etc). It drops + and - modifiers. A B-, B and B+ are all counted as 3 when you calculate UC GPA. They also normalize to semesters if your school has a different system like trimesters.

UC GPA gives 1 grade level boost for up to 8 semester-courses. Any combo of up to 8 semester long or up to 4 year long. This cap is likely so that students from schools with a very large number of AP/honor courses available don’t get too much of an advantage over equally talented and hard working students from schools with very limited offerings. An obvious compromise but that is the rule.

Most of the UCs are formulaic, meaning they assign a total ‘score’ to every application using a formula that includes the UC GPA among other factors, then admit by setting a minimum cutoff. Everyone scoring over the cutoff gets an offer. UCLA and Cal are the two schools that do not do this. They are free to look at the detailed report of classes you enter on the application - they can look at patterns, they can pay attention to freshman year, they can choose to add in credit for every AP and honor regardless of the 8 unit cap in the official UC GPA. They are more holistic in their admissions process.

Also, about the second part of my post. For an out of state resident, what would be an acceptable UW/UC GPA along with a 2190 on the SAT? Because i’m not sure i’m competitive enough to apply right now. :/
