Hello,
I am applying for medical schools in Texas for the fall of 2012. I have an undergraduate degree from UT Austin, phD from UT Austin, and now I am completing a post Doc at University of Maryland.

My first question is regarding my not so high undergraduate GPA. My undergraduate GPA was 2.9 and I got a 34 on MCAT. I did complete my phD in Neuroscience with a 4.0. Will adcoms take that into consideration?

My second question is regarding the date of turning in the application. I have written and rewritten my essays and I am having several people look at them. What is the cost/benefit of perfecting them and turning in the application a bit later versus turning them in now as they are?

Answers to the first, second, or both questions are much appreciated.
Thanks!

You are already very late for Texas applications. They should have been turned in as early in June as possible. Don’t delay much longer, they will start doing interviews in August at some schools.

Yes as many schools do rolling admissions so by the time your app is being read acceptances may have already been handed out and interview spots definitely have.

The unsegraduate gpa will be deemphasized because of grad school.

I just want to clarify that you took the mcat within the last 3 years since I believe that’s only how long it’s valid for.

Texas schools are ALL rolling admissions with a big percentage of the classes filled in the pre-match process at UTSW and UT-H in particular. Being late often results in a late (for Texas schools) December/January interview and, at best, a spot on the waiting list.

My recommendation is to get the application rolling real soon!
