I apologize if these questions have been answered already (I'm recovering from Thanksgiving and too lazy to scan through the threads). However, I was wondering if anybody could share some information (or their experiences) with financial aid at UMich. I assume merit aid is relatively nonexistent, considering the caliber of admitted students. But while perusing on the financial aid website, it seems like majority of aids/scholarships cater towards Michigan residents (I am out of state). Is this the case? Or was I just not researching the right materials? Is being OOS and not "need based" put me at a significant disadvantage

The short answer is yes. Merit scholarships are available for out of state students but from what I hear for OUT OF STATE you would have to have a near or at 4.00 unweighted gpa, VERY rigorous courses, well respected high school with significant leadership in activities and a strong essay and references and 34-36 ACT score to get any SIZEABLE amount of merit aid. Michigan looks to out of state students that don’t need financial aid for additional tuition revenue (about three times what in-state pays).

Thanks! :)

Michigan meets need for in-state students but does not guarantee to meet need for out of state students so yes merit scholarships of OSS are competitive. If you have done so, you can fill out a scholarship profile through your Wolverine Access…
