OK, so as an engineering freshman I'm going to have to take both a chem placement exam and a math placement exam. The math one I'm not too worried about, but I took AP chem back in junior year, and I'm quite certain I've forgotten a lot of what I learned. So my question is, even though I got a 4 on the AP chem exam (gives credit for chem 130), could they make me take it again if I did bad enough on my chem placement exam?

My second question for you guys is this. I took the AP calc exam this year, but as most of you probably know we won't be recieving our scores until July at the earliest. The problem is that my orientation is in mid-june; I wanted to get an early one so that I could get favorable class times. Do they ask you what you thought you got on the AP test and place you accordingly? do they automatically put you into calc 1 and sort it out later? and if I convince them to put me into calc 2 (I think I got a 4 on it), is it easy to switch out of it and into calc 1 or calc 3 depending on how I ended up doing?

No matter how you do on the chem placement, they won't revoke credit...its used to determine whether or not you can take orgo. You'll still have to take the chem lab/lecture though..

For the calc, they ask you what you think you got, then you make your schedule accordingly. So you would schedule calc 2...if you find in July that you did worse and have to take calc 1, you simply log onto wolverineaccess and change your schedule to a calc 1 class that fits. Simple

BTW...the advisors only "pencil" your schedule in, you are free to change your schedule completely after orientation (except for you engin 100 course)

The introductory math classes don't have enforced prereqs, only advisory prereqs. This means that even though you should have the equivalent of calc I before you take calc II, you're allowed to sign up for calc II without the computer system verifying you have taken the equivalent of calc I (either through self-stufy, transfer credit, or AP Credit). Basically you can sign up immediately for where you think you're going to place, and switch later if necessary.

As for the chemistry placement test, it's not that bad. I took my high school's basic chemistry class last semester senior year, and the placement test very well could've been my final.

Ok, so if I don't get a certain score on the chem placement, I will have to take chem 130 before I'm eligible to take organic chem even though I should receive AP credit for chem 130? Also, is the chem placement test all multiple choice or is there some free response as well?

A 4 on the AP test places you out of the class, 130, but does not place you out of the lab, 125/126. The reason there is a distinction is because all engineers are required to take a chemistry class and a chemistry lab. With a 4 on the AP test, you would not be required to take the class to meet the general chemistry requirement, but you would be required to take the lab. If your goal is to take Organic Chemistry, then you can just count the orgo lab towards that requirement. I'm guessing unless you completely bomb the placement test, they'll let you go straight to orgo because of AP credit.
