Course advice for UC Computer Science transfer for next year

My son has been dual enrolled at CC for this last year of high school. He plans to complete another year at CC and transfer. He would like to apply to some private and OOS schools as well as the UCs, but to do so he may not have all of the CS classes some of the UCs want since they vary by CC. He will have completed all math, science, English and IGETC.

So far his GPA is 4.0 and he thinks he can keep it very high. How detrimental is it to apply with IGETC completed and missing a couple CS classes? The privates don’t accept any of the CS classes except by taking challenge tests for a few.

Any personal experience or thoughts are appreciated. He doesn’t want to wait another year to apply for what will amount to 2 or 3 classes at most.

@ucbalumnus has a good handle on the requirements. WHat I can say is that if they say it’s a requirement, he’d better have it or it’s a guaranteed rejection. From there, get as much of the recommended as possible, keep the GPA up, and he’ll have a good shot.

It very much depends on which campus/major and which courses are missing. The ASSIST.org pages will show which available courses there are for the community college and the target campus/major (for UC and CSU). Those pages may show varying wording like required versus recommended etc… Obviously, being missing required courses is detrimental, and being missing courses available at the community college may also be frowned upon.
