Course Advise! AP Physics C vs AP Bio?

I have the option of doing AP Physics C as a junior. I really like bio and am considering becoming a biomedical engineer. However, I also want to keep physics and chemical engineering as options. I have already taken AP Chem. Should I take AP Physics as a junior or a senior? It would probably be more impressive to take it as a junior but would be slightly divergent of my intended college major. Plus, if I want to do biomedical research at UCI the summer after junior year, I won't have the biology prereq which I assume is required in the event that I could even get a position.

Doesn’t really matter. I’d say do Bio… it’s easier than physics and way more fun, in my opinion.

First, I’d just lilke to clear up some misconceptions you may be having. Your coursework in highschool doesn’t necessarily have to reflect EXACTLY what your college major will be. People change interests, and most people end up changing their original intended major anyway. What colleges like to see if you’re going into something like engineering is just general rigor in the area of science and math. It doesn’t matter which year you take specific courses; what’s important is that you take them, and you maintain good grades/rigor throughout highschool. The order just doesn’t matter. Only thing to think about here really his how one class might more positvely affect your GPA- That one should probably be taken junior year.

If you are going into any engineering major, physics is incredibly important. Physics is practically the foundation of engineering, no matter what discipline. It will definitely not be seen as divergent from your major- in fact, it will be viewed as far more valuable than almost any course you can take in highschool.

Anyways, all that being said, I would take AP Bio, for the mere reason that it could help you with that summer research.

I would take the one you enjoy more and you may find biology will help in your summer research. However, do keep in mind that colleges do consider Physics C to be a much more rigorous course, and Physics is incredibly important for engineering. Best of luck with whichever class you go with.

Then definitely take biology first. AP Bio is also slightly easier than physics C in my opinion, because you need calculus for physics, so it’s more appropriate to leave that to senior year.

Most take in their sr yr bc they have more knowledge in math by then. But it doesnt matter as long as you actually take it. Just make sure u take C one bc thats the calc based one engineering majors need.

You might want to check the universities you are considering to see which one is better accepted for credit at those universities.

Bio since you can also take the Subject Test in that subject. Physics C won’t do much for the Physics ST (I don’t think).

My S got a 5 on his AP Physics test and his university had him take it over again. They did accept his AP Calculus BC. I don’t know if it is because he’s studying to be an engineer and Physics is so important, or another reason…keep in mind that not all AP credits will be accepted. I would take the class that is more interesting and worry about what the college needs later.
