i personally think amherst has a fine campus - better than penn's perhaps

imo, the ivies with the best campuses are: dartmouth, yale, and p'ton.

Darkstar - DD is headed to Dartmouth, after ED acceptance, very similar academic profile, different ECs, but as you said no Siemens, etc.
Amherst does look like a village - a little town where some of the old historic houses have been converted to college use, in Amherst's case it is actually the frat houses converted to living quarters. Then a mix of older and newer college buildings that harmonize together to a varying degree - the required group of 60s and 70s ugly boxes that make you wonder what they were thinking, and the newer buildings added after someone woke up and said we aren't going to tear down the old, the new need to fit in. The new dorms at Amherst are amazing. By fall 2005 they should be just about finished, and all the frosh will be together is some pretty spiffy digs. When DD overnighted there, she stayed with seniors in the social dorms (some of those 70s boxes I spoke of), kind of cruddy from a Mom point of view, but actually a great living arrangement from a college student's POV.

I thought Swat was more beautiful than Yale, didn't see Princeton, although it was described to me as Disney does college.

I didn't like Princeton ... I much prefered Yale in terms of campus (and in terms of other things, too).

cangel, how about dartmouth?

??Architecture, living arrangements, scenic beauty??what?

campus beauty

I thought Dartmouth was lovely (with a couple of "What were they thinking" buildings). No smaller quads like Amherst's freshman quad, but a big central green, and old New England architecture that reminds me of Williamsburg - colonial style , I know nothing about architecture. Most of the newer buildings are red brick and harmonize well. You see some of the mountains in the background, a la Williams. No Gothic grandeur, more intimate. There is a big inn on the green with a wide front porch and rockers, lots of flowers.

When it isn't covered in 5 million feet of snow...- Cangel's daughter

I got the same feeling about princeton...

Amherst's campus seems very planned (~manhattan)... all the buildings are in neat blocks, and all the buildings are very close together, campus is fairly small... which is good for me b/c i have no sense of direction
buildings are pretty boring looking, not abstract, modern, but not old, traditional, gothic, for example, either.

Edit: oops, forgot to read this page before posting.
