Course load question

I'm a rising senior and I am selecting my senior course load.

I am going to take AP Physics 1, AP Gov, AP Econ, accounting, and journalism. I am not sure if I would want to take a math next year and if I do I can't decide to take AP Stat or Calc. I am currently in precalc regular and I hate it. I ended with a B+ this semester , but I currently have a C-. I do not plan on doing anything math or science related, but I am hoping to attend a top 30 university.

I was planning on taking AP Lit, but now I am considering taking honors. I am not sure how I would manage the extreme work load the AP Lit classes in my school require. I do a lot of extracurricular activities, run my own mentorship program, and work part time.

If you’re struggling with math - keep in mind that AP Physics is almost entirely math based (albeit a lower level of math - more Algebra II esque material, but pure applied math most of the time).

Anyways:
If you take math - take Calc. Colleges prefer to see it and of everyone I’ve talked to and based on my own experience, Calculus is easier than Pre-Calc. I managed low B’s in Honors Pre-Calc last year and now I have high A’s in Calculus - Calculus is very straightforward, my teacher describes it as Algebra on steroids. The concepts are easy to grasp and the work is primarily learning how to apply the concepts to a rather limited range of situations.**

I’m in AP Lit right now - I’m actually currently overwhelmed by an essay that I’ve procrastinated horribly on. However, this is the first time that I’ve been “overwhelmed” by Lit - most of it is quite easy and I find it less demanding than AP Lang. I’d recommend it.

** Talking about Calc AB specifically.

Thank you @preamble1776 I understand that physics is math based. I got an A in Algebra 2 and I am willing to challenge myself for physics I just don’t want to be super overwhelmed next year by possibly taking 5 APs.

Stats is super easy to take with Calc, by the way, if that’s an option you’re willing to consider.

Since you want to go to a top 30 university, the first thing you need to do is ask your GC which of these schedules will make her check a box on the GC rec of other than “most rigorous curriculum.”

Does AP Econ cover both micro and macro? If not, top colleges will regard it as half a course, even if it’s year-long in your school.

Which calc? Reg Calc, AP Calc AB , or AP Calc BC? You would probably want to avoid BC based on past performance, but either regular or AB would be viewed as preferable to AP Stats, and it’s really not that hard.

Are you currently taking AP Lang? If so, many top schools won’t accept credit for both Lit and Lang. I’m of the mindset of not taking a course if I can’t get the credit. YMMV. If you do take AP Lit, get the reading list before you leave for the year and knock out the reading in your spare time over the summer. That way, you can skim through the readings next year to refresh your memory.

It’s semantics, but, no, you’re a junior. You can’t call yourself a rising senior until that last bell sounds on your last day of class.

Thank you so much @skieurope I am taking AP Lang and I have a B. If I opt to take calc I will pick AB and AP Econ at my school is micro and macro. Also what is your opinion on auditing a course? I’m considering auditing journalism so my GPA would be higher.

AP English Literature really depends on the teacher. In my school, AP English Literature is much, much harder than AP English Language. We get far more work and the material is much harder. Expect it to be harder.

Auditing is up to you. Journalism is probably an easy A, and note that most top schools will unweight and/or reweight your GPA since all high schools weight differently.

@dextrous , OP already stated that AP Lit has a heavy work load at her school,.

No wonder I find AP English Literature hard. I can’t even read properly haha. Yeah, just do honours. We don’t have an honours class for English so consider yourself lucky.
