So in pretty much every school, 4 classes is the regular amount of classes to take. At Boston College, do you have to pay more, or is it even possible to take more than 4 classes in one semester?

Most people take 5 classes. If you’re a freshman and decide to take perspectives you’ll only have 4 classes, but perspectives counts as 2.

You need 38 courses to graduate from A&S. Most students take 5 courses each semester for the first three years (15 units), and 4 each semester senior year. You can overload with 6 courses (18 units) at no extra charge. In addition to the standard 3 unit course, you can also take add to that amount, labs (1 unit) and some 1-unit seminars. You need approval to take 6 classes, adn must have a 3.0+ in the prior semester. First semester Frosh cannot take 6 classes, but could take 5 classes+1 unit seminar+1 unit lab.

You’re actually required, as a freshman, in your first semester to take 5 courses (4 if you’re doing one like Perspectives, which counts as two classes). However, if you’re a Chem Major like me, I’ve taken 18 credits (the equivalent of 6 courses) each of my freshman semesters because I have two labs (chem and physics) along with a physics class that is four days a week.
